Do I need to grow the fingernails out on my right hand in order to play this correctly? When I play it with just my fingers it sounds really soft.
Could I have been dancing nancies?

you should try using your index finger and thumb to sort of pluck the two notes at the same time, it gives it a much better sound and fuller

Ive always used a pick for it, and it sounds dead on to me........especially when playing the LLC tab book version. I will agree that it does add an a little bit of a distinct sound when using the fingers though.....and im lucking considering I can pretty much play anything w or w/o a pick.

yea, i just tried it using my index and middle fingers, but the way you play it depends on how u fell comfortable with.... fingerpicking is a very good technique in my opinion cause it lets you creat a whole different sound by playing certain notes as opposed to strumming which gives you a pretty limited array of sounds

Thanks guys, I've never been much of a finger picker. My nails on my right hand have always been short because I also play the bass. Plus I have a bad nail chewing habit. I'll give it a try and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the help.

you dont need long nails to fingerpick, its just simply not using a pick.... you pluck the strings with your fingers, not your nails

Think of it as though you are playing a bass.
By the way, I use my 1 and 2 fingers, not thumb.
But when I think about it, I think I use a thumb for the chorus and "nailed to a tree" part.

I use my thumb just because it is easier to get the quick slaps and then make the notes fluidly but I might try the other way to see if its better..

you kinda' want to make sure you don't just lull your fingers in the verse part. You want to distinctly almost pinck "pinch" the strings together and let them smack back for that part...just fool around until you can get a sharp yet distinct sound with it...good luck
