basicly the x means "we cut out X amount of things and slashed the price X dollars"... martin x guitars are lowend and the X is the signifier of it... go with a d16 or somethign ... save up the $300 more and go for a better guitar... in the long run ifyou're set on a martin it's muych more worth it.

thanks guys. this is a terrible decison for me. ive gone through great lenghts to figure out whether or not to buy it. Ive thought about waiting and saving for a better martin but im really set on one now. most people have all said its a good guitar, from reviews and people ive talked to. I just want to make the right decision. I spose i can decide after i play it at guitar center, and let the guys there tell me. but thanks a lot guys for imput and any more is appreciated. Oh ya is the D15 acoustic electric? People on the boards seem to talk well of it.

how do you get off posting an "imo" when you just asked a question about it in another thread.. *scratches head*crash_in_to_me wrote:better, imo
It depends on the type of pickup it is. In the bridge transducers are usually the best quality sound you can get from a pickup, and to have one "retrofitted" to an existing guitar usually is not cheap. Typically you can buy a A/E with one for slightly cheaper. To install one requires the luthier to route out a little more of the void under the "bone" pieces, which requires him to re-intonate and dah dah dah $$.
As for the dumb "box" on the guitar, typically it is better to have one than not. Unless you understand the concept of signal nosie, then you probably want to have it. Because to not, leaves a higher potential for signal noise.
And some will argue that the box screws up the resonance of a body.. that's probably true. And I won't argue with that.. but it's typically in a less-than-critical spot, so unless you are buying a $4k guitar, I don't think the loss in resonance will out-weigh how "cheap" the wood is to begin with.
As for being laminate.. solid wood is the way to go, but usually the average listener can't discern the difference between a solid top (they can that part) and a laminate body vs a a solid top and solid body.. there was a french guy back when guitars were invent that did blind tests on a solid top/paper mache body, and most people couldn't tell the difference. But that's not to say, some people can't.. I most definitely can and I am sure there are others on this board that can, and many others that "claim" to be able to.
You'll find there is always "a better guitar" so waiting for enough money to buy "the best" will never happen.. I personally settled on buying a guitar around the $1k market, but I was prepared to wait, to get a higher quality instrument.. if you aren't, don't let ppl saying "that guitar sucks" stop you..

I'd say go with the electronics installed in the guitar originally. It can be more expensive to get them installed later, plus you can get better electronics when they are installed by the company. Also, solid wood is the way to go, you will be able to tell the difference after playing for a while. By the way, don't lock yourself down on Martins unless you are positive you want that sound and that guitar. There are alov of guitars out there that are handmade (Martins and Taylors, while excellent guitars, they are not completly handmade) that sound just as good if not better than the high end ones you may find in Sam Ash or Guitar Center. I just bought a Larrivee guitar which I love more than any Taylor or Martin I have ever played. (and I was originally intending to but a Taylor) Also these guitars can be found cheaper sometimes because Taylor and Martin can charge a ot for their name. You can get equivalent or better sound, and great playing and features from an entirely handmade guitar that costs less. If you go this route you could get a more advanced guitar that would still be in your price range, and even get say elecronics and a cutaway without going over your limits. Anyway, sorry for goign off topic, but I hope this helps

Yeah, I like B-Band more than fishman, too. True, the lower end B-Band pickups with mixers get as low as $100 with s&h on eBay, but at the Sam Ash out here they start around $120 on sale. Then, unless you are a luthier or really trust yourself when cutting into your guitar (which I don't believe most people would) you have to pay to get it installed by a luthier who charges by the hour. All in all, this costs around $200 with tax and such. I know because I looked into doing this before I bought my Larrivee last month, and it was cheaper to get the guitar with it already instealled. To my luck, Larrivee already comes with the higher end B-Band pickups so it saved me roughly $100 by doing it that way.TrippnBill686 wrote:^ Not necessarily. I installed a pickup after-the-fact (B-Band AST), it cost $90, and I like it more than the Fishmans guitar manufacturers install in the factory. Just my $0.02 though.
