Covers?

Unread post by Easy E » Tue Oct 14, 2003 12:20 am

Ive been looking back at some old posts about whether covers should be exactly what the original or should they be someone's interpretation. It just seems to me that its lose-lose for the amatuer guitar player. You cover it right and people are like "Well, I'd rather listen to the original if it's going to sound exactly the same." But if you interpret differently the consensus is, "who are you to interpret this song, its not your song to play around with you hack." It seems only established musicians can take songs to extremes and get away with it. Sorry if anyone is tired of this topic i was just looking at old DMBfanJason posts.

And whoever thinks Dave's cover of Watchtower is better than Jimi's just ain't right.

i think if you're doing a cover, then you're taking a song and making it your own. you have the ability and right to do w/ it what you want...cause you're making it your song. now if you choose to do a cover and make it exactly like it is for whatever reason ie you like the original and want to acknowledge your respect for it...or you want to show your talent by playing a hard song. then cool.

but if you want to make the song completeely different...then damn, i wanna hear it. it's kinda like two heads are better than 1, you may have thought of something awesome that the original didnt think of. take johnny cash's version of hurt for example. the piano in that song was freaking amazing. and his versin was different but both songs are heavy w/ emmotion. but johnny doing it was a form of respect for not only the song, but for trent. if im trent i say, do w/ it what you want. id love to hear what you have to add to it.

i say cover it how you want and screw what everyone else thinks. but....that's me.

Haha...jason would support this post. I'm a firm supporter of covering however you want to cover. Its usually pretty obvious if someone is trying to throw their own twist on a song, and its usually obvious if someone is working at getting it note for note. I try to give feedback based on what I perceive, but that doesnt necessarily mean what I perceive is always correct.

I just honestly think that Dave's songs just can't get any better than the way that Dave plays it...I mean, I haven't heard "the maker" by the original, but I would bet that Dave does it better, I like his Wild Horses better than the Rolling Stones too...the man just knows what's up with what sounds good...but hey, if you can pull off a Dave cover thats not note for note, and it sounds just as good, then I will definitely let you know, but for now, let's all just try to be Dave mmmmmkay? :)
