Comments on DMB by the man I most respect
My jazz teacher a few years ago finally sent me his opinion on DMB. This guy's in his mid-70s, and has played with everyone from Brubeck to Coltrane to Parker to Davis. Not to mention, I've never met a person with 1/100th his understanding of music. And he's no ordinary 76 year-old...he owns every Radiohead album on vinyl.
Here's the general gist:
He likens them to a Keith Jarrett-influenced The Band. He said that "they'd be a complete mess if it weren't for the rhythm section." And that "what the bassist lacks in talent, he makes up for with taste" and that "while the drummer is a bit too busy for my taste, he's clearly the class of the group." He wasn't too complimentary towards Roi, saying that, "he might serve to introduce the masses to truly skilled saxophonists" and he called Boyd "a complete joke...a player whose presence significantly brings down the overall musicianship of the band." Strangely enough, he only mentioned Dave in passing, saying that "the lead singer should not attempt falsetto, but his technique has improved considerably from the first to the second album that you sent" and that "the songs are much more intelligently written than the 'violinist' would lead you to believe."
His conclusion: a good band (he loves #41, The Last Stop, and The Stone) that has an absolutely world-class rhythm section and could be a great band if some of the songs' arrangements were changed (i.e. see ya Boyd).
Anyway, I thought that you might be interested in this because while most jazz musicians despise DMB with a passion (sans Carter), here's a 70-something guy with more musical knowledge in his fingernail than I can possibly imagine who enjoyed some of their stuff.

For the most part I agree with all of you. With each show my level of irritation with Boyd has increased. When I went to the last Gorge show this year I expected the same. But, Boyd kicked a** on Sunday Sept. 8th @ the Gorge. Get a copy of Jon Ice’s pull and listen to Seek Up and LIOG. The whole concert was pretty epic. I have seen 10 Gorge DMB shows and this one was up there with 7/17/99.ticohans wrote:just wanted to let you all know hahaha

That's very interesting. It's good to know how other people feel about the band. I do agree that perhaps Boyd is the least talented out of all of them, but i really enjoy his playing. Sometimes i think that he could be toned down a bit, but overall, i think he really adds a lot to the band, think of Ants (live, especially) and the stone, and bartender, and i find that i like a lot of the songs where he has a solo riff, such a s Pig. Perhaps he is a little unorthadox though, and it was good to read what you wrote.

i like boyd.....
and he evens out the group
look at all the members' physical attributes
dave is no bodybuilder but still in relatively good health
stefan is skinny
carter is reasonably fat, but he still has a lot of muscle underneath it
leroi is just plain fat lol
and boyd even them out - being jacked
lol
just a little useless info
but my REAL opinion of boyd, is that he just needs to be more consistent.
he ruins a few songs, true, but he makes other songs
i think that little violin riff that comes in in the softer part of the stone almost makes the song
among others
they definitely shouldnt DROP him
he just needs to listen to himself and realize that what he plays isnt always good and improve on it

Everybody always asks me how she's doing. Has she really lost her mind? I said "I couldn't tell you, I've lost mine."

Ripped...
I have to say that Boyd is one ripped mo'fo...
though it may be weird, i am quite intrigued
though it may be weird, i am quite intrigued

but hey... at least you can appreciate what he's doing... its not like every mainstream band has a violin player... i think he should play more... theres alot of off time in songs... now of course you dont want ragin violin solos all the time.... thats where creativity kicks in and he should come up with a new bag a tricks to add some dynamics to the songs....

I agree he needs to use some more dynamic and unusual techniques. I think he's sorta in a rut now. Every hear blue water baboon farm? Boyd does a really cool solo using delay. It's beautiful but unusual and kinda creepy. Wish he'd do more like that.
