What are compressors for.?

How do u use them and what do they do?? :?

i wouldn't consider this to be a final answer, but i believe they help level off the sounds so that there is not significant influx of sound (up-and-down) but instead everything everything is kind of melded together...it kind of balances everything into a more organized quality of sound... that's just my partial understanding, but may open up the forum to others with more knowledge....

Good answer....cds would suck if vocals were all over the place....

As I understand it, compressors were originally used to provide an even volume level for vocals as singers have a tendency to move to different distances from the mic. It'll bring the lower volume parts up to a predefined level and the higher parts down. They're also commonly used for other instruments as well.

I've fooled with some presets in Cool Edit Pro with some good results (I am a total amateur, mind you). Have a look here:
