Rhyme and Reason Cover

Unread post by Bedurndurn » Tue Sep 02, 2003 1:15 am

Okay, new cover song for critique.

Rhyme and Reason

Rhyme and Reason (without stereo seperation)

Okay, aside from the general good/bad commentary, I'd also like your opinion one a few particulars:

1) Stereo Seperation - Too much? I did it mainly because the vocals were overpowering the guitar so I figured if I slightly biased the vocals and guitar into seperate channels (I did R:20 and L:20 in CEP), it'd be easier to hear them both clearly.

2) Echo - I couldn't get a really loud/badass vocal part going for parts of the chorus without making it either full of my breathing noises or having it clip like a mofo. To try and give those sections of the song a little extra oomph, I tried adding an echo effect to parts of the second and third chorus. Did it work? Any recommendations on what else to try?

That's mostly it, if anyone has any other editing suggestions or ideas I'd be more than happy to entertain them. Hell, if anybody wants the original tracks to fiddle around with, I'd be happy to send em over.

that stereo separation may not have been the best of ideas, it made the overall composition sound rather uninspired

the guitar playing was good and so was the singing, except you got a off rhythm just a bit at certain places

i couldn't tell you about the seperation because if you ask anyone that's ever listened to anything of mine, im the worst mixer in the world so you wouldn't want my advice anyway. i did kinda like the echo in the chorus. probably could have done w/o it, but it didn't sound bad. as far as the actualy tallent, you did a good job. the guitar sounded good, like fatjack said a little off rhythm every once in a while, but nothing that sounded bad. vocals were overall good too. good job.

Personally, I think more emotion is needed while singing.. just makes it that much better.. overall, besides the emotion, sounds great..

yep. keep singing and practicing with that...besides facial expressions and body language, the voice is what can carry emotions. it takes a good while to be able to convey this, and it's not always about screaming that'll show anger (despite what "nu metal" and "emo" would say about that.) quiet intensity, rough growls, etc. like a rollingstone by bob dylan, hallelujah covered by jeff buckley, done wrong by ani difranco, let the truth sting by david gray, glory bound and where did i go wrong by martin sexton, walk away by ben harper, #41, all showcase variant nuances that can help convey emotion and there are countless other examples, those are the only ones i can think of off the top of my head. even aretha franklin's "Respect" and many Janis Joplin songs will show you this. listen, emulate, find something that you can relate to and find the passion in the song.

great cover overall. i can't comment much on the technical mixing aspects, because i'm still working on learning it myself. :) other than that, nothing else to be said that hasn't already been said. lol. :)

Cool beans. Thanks for the feedback, and tomorrow I will get a start on the non-David Duchovney version.
