what to do?.....

Unread post by paywad927 » Tue Jul 22, 2003 5:43 pm

i have been looking to buy a new guitar, and have had my eye on the martin d-16rgt. however, today i played a takamine ean10cx. i thought that this was a wonderful sounding guitar. the takamine was $739 without electronics or case. with electronics and case it would be around $1000. i have seen the martin for around $900, which do yall think is the better deal? i really dont need the electronics now, but i am planning on keeping my next guitar for a while and i might need it in the future.

what would you do? buy the martin and have electronics or a pickup installed later? or buy the tak and get the elecrtonics now? any info or advice yall would have would be appreciated. thanx.

if it were me and i had to choose between the 2 i would choose the martin simply because of the rosewood back and sitka top. im not a cedar fan, and i love rosewood. but its all what you think.

ok, so martin seems to be the obvious choice, but what about electronics? i dont think i would use it too much now, but is it worth it just to get the electronics now incase i need it later? or is it better to just wait and see if i need them and just have a pickup installed?

I'm in the EXACT same boat as you man. I had my eye on a Martin as well, but then I played a wonderful sounding Alvaraz for $679 withough electronics or case. I really don't need the electronics now either but I'm also planning on keeping my next guitar for awhile and I might need it in the future.

you could always get the electronics installed later on but that might turn out to be more costly moneywise and soundwise. anyway, yeah my cousin bought a Takamine (don't know the model) with electronics and a case for about $2 G. sounds amazing plugged in and has phenomenal action. nice evenly balanced tone, too. Go with what SOUNDS and FEELS good to you. yeah Martins are good but not all of em are. if ya come across another brand that sounds better and is less expensive, I say GO FOR IT!. have fun and good luck in your decisions.
good, and you?

some martins are good, but martins are inconsistent. it takes a while to find a good one.

does dave have electronics installed in his martin, or does he use a pickup?

IIRC, Dave had Fishman Matrix II's installed in all of his guitars by Monk (not factory-installed)

yeah, i knew that the "e" in 914ce meant electronics. but i thought there was a difference between electronics and a pickup. i thought a pickup was sumthin you attached to the soundhole that allowed you to plug in and electronics allowed you to change the bass and treble and all that stuff.

Okay, let me explain:

All guitars with "electronics" have a pickup *installed* (inside the guitar near the soundhole). You can have a pickup factory-installed, or you can have it installed (or install it yourself). There are also pickups that can simply be sat inside the soundhole that are removable (however, usually the quality is not as good as an installed pickup) - Dean Markley makes the majority of these to my knowledge.
