layering songs for recording

i just recorded a bunch of song on my comp but its so hard to layer them and put in solos because i'm only using the sound recorder. i tried to get cool edit pro, but it looks like you have to pay a lot for it. does anyone know any free programs i can get where layering would be a bit easier?

you guys aren't supposed to be talking about that openly on the boards...jkanter has asked that you don't..so i would recommend obliging by his wishes.....
