Taylor 614ce, 714ce and 814ce models

Unread post by GreedylilPig » Sat Feb 23, 2008 10:52 am

I am considering a Taylor 614ce, 714ce or 814ce purchase and I'm having a difficult time choosing which model to go with. I'd be very interested to hear any feedback any of you may have on these models, especially in a comparative context.

From the little bit the asshole salesmen let me play, I've found that the 814ce seems to be the "warmest" or "brightest" of the three while the 614ce sounds the "fullest". I play a wide variety of music genres, although mostly folk/country and softer rock. It seems the 814ce lends itself more to those latter styles but I'd imagine the 614ce to be the more versatile.

Please share any comparative opinions that you may have on these models.

Be excellent to one another.

I have played all 3 models, and own a 614ce and a regular 714 myself. They're all great guitars. I actually prefer the sound of the 614ce over every other Taylor model that I've ever played. There's just something about the sound that is better, to me, than the other two models that you mentioned. The 714ce and 814ce are awesome too, but I've always been partial to the 614ce. Your best bet would be to have someone else there with you to play at the same time to hear how the guitars all compare to each other. In the end, you have to go with what sounds best to you, and you can't go wrong with any of those. Good luck in your search.

Gibson!

Taylors sound decent live but in front of a mic, they have no soul.

If you are considering Taylor, I would look at their dreads, not the 14 shape.

I know that this is probably little or no help to you but I recently went guitar shopping for a high end Taylor, but after spending a considerable amount of time with them (I liked the 714ce) I ended up falling in love with and purchasing a Gibson CJ-165 Rosewood. It sounds perfect to me and it is very comfortable to play, not to mention I really like the looks of it.

I guess I really didn't provide any useful information for you    but I would at least check out a few Gibsons...

I have played enough Gibson acoustics in my day to safely say that most of them sound like shit unplugged and just as bad plugged in. The only good one is the Jumbo and those things cost a bloody fortune, better off buying a Taylor or something. Why waste money on a tree trunk guitar like a Gibson? Dreadnaught guitars also have a completely different sound then a Jumbo style, the Jumbo's are too thumpy and bassy while Dreads have a nice balance but with a slightly better treble end. I once played a 1974 Gibson J-45 Deluxe which is a dreadnaught and it did not sound nearly as good as any of the Taylors on the wall next to it.
