How do you strum when fingerpicking?

Unread post by vipergts281 » Thu Jun 19, 2003 5:53 pm

What fingers do you use to strum chords when playing without a pick? Any techniques that I can use?

Thanks.

totaly depends on what style of song you are finger picking...when I "strum" without a pick, I just just pinch my index and thumb together to create a PIC..when playing classical style, you just rake your 4 loose fingers over the strings...

I do the same thing sometimes....use my index and thumb to make my "own pick". Good, I wasn't sure if I was the only one who did that or not.

I am mainly talking about John Mayer songs. Specifically "3x5" Live.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

i like to use the surface of my fingernails to rake across the strings, this technique really sounds cool with rythm hits

On the topic of 3x5 specifically.. I do a mixture of strum with my index finger and thumb, and raking with my 4 fingers.. play the basic strumming index/thumb style and then the accents are rakes.. and then mixed in with that you do some finger picking of some notes
