Advice about a Guitar Trade

Unread post by dmbvideos » Sun Apr 29, 2007 4:42 pm

Hey all,

I have a 2006 Martin D35, and am in talks with a guy with a 2004 Taylor 714ce.
The Martin doesn't have electronics, whereas the Taylor has the ES.
Both are in great condition. It would be a straight up trade.

The Martin sells for about $2100; the Taylor for $2749.
Those prices are based on Sam Ash online.
I know you can probably get them cheaper elsewhere.

Does this sound like a good trade? Who's getting a better deal? Equal?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Tony | dmbvideos.com

I'm not an expert but I know that some early 2000ish models of Taylors were having issues with their Expression System pickups. The 2004 models perfect... I just wanted to give you a heads up about it so you can check for yourself.

Beyond that, it sounds like a fairly incredible trade if you like Taylors.

Oh, i'm sure you are aware of this fact but due to the Taylors nature and body style its going to have a thinner and considerably less "boomy" sound than the Martin... but if you played them already i'm sure you know that.

Taylors are garbage. Martins aren't. Keep your Martin.

I have a Taylor 614CE and I love it, but there is no doubt that if I ever buy another high end guitar it will definitely be a Martin. There is no substitute for that thick Martin bass. Everytime I go to my guitar teachers house I always pick up his old Martin and just bang away on it. Love that sound, sounds like a cannon. So that's just my 2 cents take it for what's it's worth. I guess it's just a matter of preference to the player.

Taylors are alright in a band setting...but only if you want your instrument to stand way out. If you are recording or playing solo, keep your martin. You can get a martin to sound like a Taylor with eq and preamps anyways but you really cant make a Taylor sound like a martin.

Based on numbers alone, it seems you are getting a good deal if you decide to go through with it. Just make sure to test out the electronics on the Taylor.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Thanks for your advice. I think I'm gonna keep it (for now).
I got a great quote on a custom 614ce right from the factory.
I'll keep the Martin for recording. Maybe I'll sell it one day.

Gee, I don't think Larrivee would be happy to hear that you aren't trashing EVERY other guitar that's not theirs.
