find a natural pattern
the way i learned to fingerpick was to find out a picking pattern that felt natural to my fingers (for some reason the pattern to dust in the wind came naturally). when you find that pattern work from there. more difficult songs like fleetwood mac's big love use a style that combines a bass a lead part that are separate. to master these songs you have to be able to see where notes from the lines come together (it really helps if you have the actual music). i would have to say that fingerpicking songs require more practice than any other type of song. just don't get frustrated when you first start out!

The song that helped me the most with finger picking was blackbird by the beatles.

couldn't have said it better. just try out different, relatively easy fingerpicking songs and find one which suits you, then when you do, start doing some variations of it and messing around.fatjack wrote:the way i learned to fingerpick was to find out a picking pattern that felt natural to my fingers
i can't give you much advice otherwise...the christmas i got my first guitar fingerpicking came naturally, and i fumbled so much when trying to use a pick. so i guess i worked backwards, eh?

best of luck with learning fingerpicking...quite fun stuff.
