I'm sure many of you are familiar with the term lateral learning - as opposed to vertical learning, which is more or less music theory... Where as lateral learning is actually playign songs. My question is - what can I play to progress laterally with my playing? What exercises can I do that will help me become a better player? Are there any songs in particular that you would reccomend to learn that could possibly add to my playing ability?

Umm... learn music theory. What you're asking is what you defined as vertical learning...
