guitarin outside

Unread post by proudestmonkey41 » Mon May 22, 2006 9:41 pm

so summer/ nice weather is on its way here, and im going to want to play my guitar outside. last year i didnt care cause it was a piece of crap. but now i have my new guitar, and i dont want to warp it or anything. soo what do i need to look out for when it comes to playing outside? warmth? humidity? do i have to do something before i play outside? or can i just bring it out and go?

It should be fine as long as you don't plan on leaving it outside for long periods of time. I am looking for Kahn's thread regarding guitar in temperature changes, so give me a bit here.

Edit: Brilliant! http://www.dmbtabs.com/boards/viewtopic ... +checklist

playing a guitar outside will not effect it one bit as long as you dont leave it out for 10 hours at a time in extreme temperature and humidity changes.

If you are going to have it out for a long duration bring a hardcase and humidifier and try to store it out of the sun.

Also, be careful of bumping the sides on the ground when you play outside. I would sit around the plaza at school and sit down on a cement bentch or on the asphalt and ended up putting a few bumps on the bottom part of my guitar on the edges. Just something I look back at now and kind of kick myself about because I never knew when I hit it every time, it was just little by little over a long period of time and it starts to show... It sounds stupid but it happens easily and I see it on alot of other peoples guitars that are not careful.

seriously, i cant emphasize enough... ...USE YOUR COMMON SENSE.

if people are going to be drinking heavily, dont bring it.
if conditions are questionable, dont take it
the beach is always bad for your guitar.
camping is never a good idea.

but just hangiong out whereever, not a big deal. but expect the unwexpected. i set my acoustic on a counter top for 1 minutes while i chjanged some laundry, and some fat chick's gut knocked it off the table and cracked it.

I don't even set my guitar on my bed in fear the cealing fan might break and fall on it. Common sense is the key, good advise and good points. Just give it some time, it always takes a little while to stop babying a new guitar...

but you knwo what i mean. sand, rocks, sticks, water, etc... just a lot of elements.

I guess if you want to do that just get a hitty guitar. makes no sense to bring a $800+ guitar to the beach., just spend $150 on an RD20 and bring it. consider it an insurance investment.

or get a bad ass case with locks so people cant open it if you leave it for a minute.

Those RD20's are one guitar in that pricerange that I am more then content in playing. Alot of guitars in that range have ok sound but play for shit, I love the rd20, they play like butta.

Now that I purchased a nice Larrivee, it's been pretty much locked up when I'm not playing it and it doesn't come outside unless I have a show.

But as for advise for playing outside. Two things I would avoid are a) direct sunlight...this can cause the top to yellow and obviously make exposed wood expand while shaded wood does not, resulting in problems
and b) campfires...extreme heat on maybe only one face of the guitar, this is NOT good for the structural integrity at all
