Well first of all what kind of sound are you going for? Like what tones of other bands' guitars do you like? Its hard to give recomendations without a little info about what you like and your style. Also, you might get some more response in the general guitar forum.

Thanks for correcting me check. But Ill have to disagree about the SG...although its a very badass guitar I prefer a firebird over it anyday. Ever since I got a firebird I wont play any other electric...Its gibson's version of the telecaster and I love it.

I love my Fender Squier Deluxe Strat. It play beautifully and looks real nice too. I think it was about 250-275. Some of the real low end Squier stuff looks cheap IMO, but if you bump up a model or two, they look great!

or the old squier stuff. I have a squier from around 1994. The headstock says fender just like a normal fender, but has a little squier logo on the nub end of the headstock. It sounds far better than any POSkorean squier ive heard made today. and I got it for $150 back in 1996.

If you want a good guitar for 500 bucks look on ebay for Danelectro's which are basically the same as Dave's Jerry Jones Baritone, I think his might be the precursor to the Dano's or something. Anyway you can easily find one like Dave's or similar like the U1 or the U2 for less than 500 bucks, some people rip you off though for price because they are basically a semi budget guitar. I recall reading that back during the 60's when guys like Jeff Back in the Yardbirds used them, they actually owned several guitars because they were prone to breaking easily, the reissues though dont have that problem nor do a lot of the older ones from the 70's
