Unread post by dmbguitar718 » Sat Nov 09, 2002 3:48 pm

I am 99.9% sure that this is the way to play it. It's kinda long, but it has everything ever included in this song, live and studio, even tips on how to make your own solo...

BTW, I'm pretty this tab I found is from the old dmbtabs.com site...(hope i dont have have permission or something... but THIS IS NOT MY TAB)

E|--0---0--0-0-0--3^------------------3^---|

FOR THE LIVE VERSION WITH THE BAND
Jam
This is the jam that consists of power chords (hence the name)

e|-----------------------------------------|
B|-----------------------------------------|
G|-----------------------------------------|
D|-----------------------------------------|
A|-2-----5---7-----5---2-----5---7-----5---|
E|-0-----3---5-----3---0-----3---5-----3---|

                                     etc...
This is usually followed by a stop time jam using the first and third chords of the jam.
It's really simple so I won't bother tabbing it.

Blues Jam
This is the newer blues jam that is in the Listener Supported version, among others.

Here is the underlying part Dave plays.

e:------------------------------------------------|
B:---------------------------------(Fill-Here)----|
G:------------------------------------------------|
D:------------------------------------------------|
A:-------------------x-x-x--7-7--x-xx--x-xx-x-----|
E:---0--3---/12--10--x-x-x--5-5--x-xx--x-xx-x--3--|

The first slide up to the twelfth fret is actually a muted slide. Dave uses these a lot
to achieve a percussive filler sound. Start the slide normally, sliding with the string
fretted. Gradually release pressure on the string, so that you are simply muting it when
you get to the end of the slide. Listen to the way it sounds on the audio clip, and try
to mimic the sound.

JAM GUIDE:
I'm going to start off by detailing some of the high chords Dave uses,
because these are usually good for the beginning of the jam and for ending fills.

Here are the three primary high chords:

    I II III
e:-12--|--10--|--7--|
B:-12--|---8--|--7--|
G:-12--|---9--|--7--|
D:-11--|------|--6--|
A:-----|------|--7--|
E:-----|------|-----|

Dave uses Chord I in many places, but my favorite is in this lick:

e:-----------12-12-\----------|
B:-----------12-12-\----------|
G:-----------12-12-\----------|
D:----------------------------|
A:----------------------------|
E:--0/12--0-------------------|
The slide to the twelfth fret is a "muted" slide. Dave uses these a
lot to achieve a percussive filler sound. Start the slide normally,
sliding with the string fretted. Gradually release pressure on the
string, so that you are simply muting it when you get to the end of
the slide. Listen to the way it sounds on the Real Audio file (soon),
and try to mimic the sound.

The main use of Chord I, however, is ending various fills. If you get a
good sense of what the chord sounds like, you can hear it in many places
during the jam in Listener Supported. Once you learn more of the common
fills, you can experiment with adding this chord in at the end as you deem fit.

To play Chord I and II, use your ring finger to hold down the higher 3 string
(e, B and G). Use your index finger to fret the note on the D string, and get
the note on the A string with your middle finger. That is the way Dave plays
those chords.

Chords II and III often are played together, but separately they are used in a
similar manner to Chord I. Also, Dave uses these chords before he starts to do
his little improvisation parts during the jam. These intro licks with Chords II
and III are shown in measure A and B below:

        A B C
e:-10-10-10-10--|----------------------------|--10----x--7--|
B:--8--8--8--8--|-------------------x-8-8-8--|---8----x--7--|
G:--9--9--9--9--|--x-12-12-12-------x-6-6-6--|---9----x--7--|
D:--------------|--x-11-11-11---or-----------|-----------6--|
A:--------------|----------------------------|-----------7--|
E:--------------|----------------------------|--------------|
Measure C is the combination lick. This is played frequently as a fill in the
Listener Supported jam.

Now that we have covered the higher chords, we'll move on to the power chord
licks that make up a major part of Dave's solo.

Dave uses power chords based on the E blues scale, which consist of either the
same note in two octaves or a note and another a fifth above it. He uses these,
usually, in combinations of threes. (Sometimes he skips the middle chord of the
three) Below are most of the walks he uses in his solos:

                  Chord Walk
e:------------------------------------------|
B:------------------------------------------|
G:-----------------------or--7-8-9---7-8-9--|
D:--12-13-14---12-13-14---------------------|
A:---------------------------5-6-7---5-6-7--|
E:--10-11-12---10-11-12---------------------|

           Chord Walk Variant #1
e:------------------------------------------|
B:------------------------------------------|
G:------------------------------------------|
D:-----------------------or--7-8-9---7-8-9--|
A:--12-13-14---12-13-14------5-6-7---5-6-7--|
E:--10-11-12---10-11-12---------------------|

           Chord Walk Variant #2
e:------------------------------------------|
B:------------------------------------------|
G:---------------------------7-8-9---7-8-9--|
D:--12-13-14---12-13-14--or--5-6-7---5-6-7--|
A:--10-11-12---10-11-12---------------------|
E:------------------------------------------|

Dave also uses these chords in other patterns, such as:

e:----------------------|
B:----------------------|
G:---14-14---12--11--9--|
D:----------------------|
A:---12-12---10---9--7--|
E:----------------------|

Once you learn these, you can use them in any order and fashion you wish.
Surrounding chord walks like these is a great place to put the higher chords
you learned earlier. For instance, try doing a chord walk and ending it with
chord I from the higher chords.

A cool and easy sounding lick is to do slides using these chords. They will
sound better if done in a fingerpicking section of a jam (i.e. the end of
Dave's solo on Listener Supported). Here are some of the more common slides Dave uses:

e:------------------------------------------|
B:------------------------------------------|
G:--7/9\7---------11/12\11--------12/14\12--|
D:----------and-------------and-------------|
A:--5/7\5----------9/10\9---------10/12\10--|
E:------------------------------------------|
Using these slides one after another for a little while sounds good, so
experiment with various patterns. Try mixing in some of the chord walks
from above, and a few high chords here and there.

Dave mixes all these power chord licks up a bit by using little blues walks.
He pretty much confines himself to the following patterns:

e:------------------------------------------|
B:------------------------------------------|
G:------------------------------------------|
D:--------------------------------12-13-14--|
A:------------10-11-12--12-13-14------------|
E:--10-11-12--------------------------------|
You can use these walks in groups of threes, or however you like. If you are
interested in making up more of your own licks and chords to fit with the
Jimi Thing blues jam, check out this fret table for frets 9 through 17:

e:------------12----------15------17-|
B:----10--11--12----------15--16--17-|
G:-9----------12------14--15--16-----|
D:-9----------12--13--14----------17-|
A:----10------12--13--14----------17-|
E:----10--11--12----------15--16--17-|
This shows what notes will fit with the jam. (In this case, it is notes
from an E-based blues scale).

Now that you have learned the bits and pieces, play a recording that has the
blues jam (i.e. Listener Supported) and play along. Try mixing in the basic
jam rhythm (below) to make the whole thing flow together. You can play the
rhythm and add shorter fills in the "fill here" area if you are playing by
yourself. If you want to jam along with a friend, just have someone play the
rhythm part while you jam away.

Basic Jam Rhythm Part

e:------------------------------------------------|
B:---------------------------------(Fill-Here)----|
G:------------------------------------------------|
D:------------------------------------------------|
A:-------------------x-x-x--7-7--x-xx--x-xx-x-----|
E:---0--3---/12--10--x-x-x--5-5--x-xx--x-xx-x--3--|

hope that works...it did for me.
