How you all record

Unread post by castellar » Mon Jan 23, 2006 10:33 pm

Just curious on a couple things because i am getting the m-audio pre usb interface shipped as we speak. But I was wondering if when you all record your originals or covers, if you play the whole thing out on guitar, or play some and stop and then continue from where you left off, or basically how you go about the recording process. I just dont think its possible for me to play a whole song and get the timing perfectly for when i lay the vocals down. Thanks

What I do is kinda sing along in my head, even mouth the words, as I lay down the guitar track, so as to get the timing right when I lay the vocals, and to make sure I don't lose my place when recording the guitar. If you don't know all the words by heart, then write them down on a paper and put that in front of you as you record. That's how I did all 4 songs that I just posted, I don't have all those words memorized, especially not Konstantine (9 minutes long  ), but I had all the words layed out, and I know how the songs goes, so I just mouth the words as I play. That's it.

And yes, I record the guitar track all the way through in one take. If I screw it up, I start again 'till I get it right. Patience is a virtue.

Ya it is always going to sound better if you can get it in one take as opposed to many on the guitar. Vocals on the other hand are differnt because alot of times you have pauses that you can come right into. I do that alot on vocals because i'll like the way the first verse sounds but not the second, but the majority of the time i do everything in one take if I can. But that's why it takes months for bands to record an album man, practice and trial and error and fuck up and redue until it's gold :).

I am pretty much the same. I'll record the guitar part live while singing, but I will not record the vocals. I do direct from my pickup because I have never been happy with a mic'd sound. I keep recording that until I am happy with one solid take. If there are some small mistakes I will usually leave them there and do another guitar track to try and cover them up and smooth them out. Then I go back and do many vocal takes and keeping the best aspects of each and piecing together the song. This is actually how I write most of my lyrics as well. I get the music and then just sing whatever comes to mind and put it all together later.
