IEM Question

Unread post by Dheibs » Sat Jan 14, 2006 1:23 am

I recently watched a JTR video from 01 and it was synced with an IEM of the audio. anyways, when Dave was talking with Carter about the song before they started playing it, I noticed that Carter is talking through a mic. is that a completely differant mic than the one he uses for backup vocals? Also, How does the person who is illegally picking up there voices when "off-mic" record this? I dont understand because i dont see dave having a seperate mic to talk to other band members with. This is most likely a stupid question. I know it has something to do with airwaves and shit like that but i just dont understand. Can someone help me out and elaborate on this topic? thanks

I often wonder how they communicate through a seperate mic. Is it button activated?

Yes.

And to record one...you need to have an IEM Receiver (Scanner), since the IEMs are wireless, you can pick up the signal on the audience and record it. It's illegal.

Im not so sure you need a scanner to pick it up. I remember reading something different. Im sure you can get the frequency by use of scanner but to record it is a different sceneario.

a) Everyone but Carter's IEM has a microphone that is located at the spot a valve from the jaw attaches to the eardrum, allowing it to pick up anything you say, and is not button-activated. I believe that Carter's is a separate microphone because the vibrations from the drums would interfere with the vibrations picked up by the IE microphone.
b) Using a scanner is not illegal, it's simply against band policy.

Well, I didn't do a good job explaining it because I'm not a biologist, but there's a valve that runs from your mouth to your eardrum (it's how you hear yourself speak), and the earpiece just positions a mic right where that valve comes into the ear.

I always thought that was dave's IEM mic hanging on the collar of his shirt...

I thought the same thing. I've seen it on the DVDs.

When you see the thing hanging on the shirt, it's most often the earpiece itself. A lot of artists take them out for parts of the show, I guess they find it uncomfortable, because it will not be there all the time.

I think the earpieces that the band wears are white, just from footage I've seen. The thing on Dave's shirt that I've seen looks like the mics that newscasters wear.
