palm muting
Can someone explain the propper technique for palm muting and how dave does it?

Well, basically you have to place your right had, in the place where the strings are tied in the RIGHT end of the guitar (after the hole).
You have to put the lower part of the hand (the part that is used for breaking wood in martial arts).
That's just the very basic of it, you'll notice that the sound you get is a more "turned off" one, because the strings can't vibrate fully, hence making a lower sound.
Sorry for the poor vocabulary, but I don't know the parts of the guitar in english!
And I don't know exactly if/what dave does in particular.
