The Mystery Of The Lillywhite Sessions

Unread post by Nitro1515 » Wed Aug 31, 2005 12:02 am

Anybody else incredibly intrigued by what happened during these sessions? I would love to know what actually went down inside the studio for those 3 months, and the following tour. I wonder how it went from something so good, to something that basically tore the band apart. (The rumor is they did break up at the end of the summer tour in 2000 that year. Which was why Dave went to go work with Ballard in the first place.) Anyway, these have got to be some of the most, if not the most moving pieces of work this band has ever done and probably will ever do. If finished it would have surpassed BTCS, and in all honesty, to me anyway, it is its equal even in its unfinished state. Well those are just some of my thoughts on the whole ordeal, I would like to get a good conversation going since this is probably my favorite thing to talk about in terms of DMB.

i agree it almost seems like the dissonance within the band and with the producer, helped create some of the best music the band ever created. the darkness of the album captures the songs so perfect. thats why in my opinion busted stuff never did any of the songs justice. granted you never know came out of the busted stuff recordings, which is one of my favorite dmb tunes. but i find myself listening to lillywhite much more often than a lot of the band's albums.

i would have loved to be there to get an idea of what was taking place, but then again on some level it would have been strange to be there. especially considering the dreary nature of the recording process. either way the lillywhite sessions were amazing it just sucks the band view it as an unhappy time for the band.

edit - i would have much rather been with the band during the recording of BTCS, seems like the peak and a happy time for the band.

I don't think they would be around anymore. We would have gotten one last classic CD and then Dave would have gone solo and that would be that.

but that brings up a different debate, think about the music we have goteen post lillywhite. i would hate to see the band break up, but its quite possible we will never hear music anywhere near the caliber pre-lillywhite

I agree. Busted Stuff is a nice album if you want to hear some different versions of the LWS songs but it doesn't hold a candle to the original. For instance I listed to BS maybe once a month while I listen to the LWS everyday. I also agree it would be tough to actually witness what happened during the sessions, but I really want to know what exactly happened. There is so much speculation that Dave was drinking too much and whatever, but I actually think the rest of the band's egos got in the way for the first time and wanted more say in the writing process.

Very true. I actually don't think we will ever hear anything like those songs again. The band is apparently in love with Batson and he is here to stay not just for the next album but the ones after it as well. So unless they do something drastically different with him for the next one then it looks like we are stuck with the same stuff for the next 6 years or so.

If LWS were completed, it would easily have been the greatest DMB album. Captain off LWS seriously gives me chills everytime. If mastered.... holy shit i dont even know. And then who knows what would have happened for the following albums.

That version of Captain is some of their best studio work ever.

 I've been listening to that song a lot lately. The music is simple yet beautiful and the lyrics are some of Dave's best.

the biggest let down for me of the Busted Stuff sessions was the disappearance of SUAD and JTR, they were my two favorite tunes off of the lillywhite sessions

damn now i have to listen to LWS
