Need help/critiquing with a solo bass piece

Unread post by i like tictacs » Tue Jun 07, 2005 4:35 pm

OK. So I just hooked up my bass to my computer and played. There was no specific order and I know I fucked up a few times, but tell me what you liked and what you didn't like. It was all improv so it goes with some new ideas thrown in there. A work in progress if you will. But I'd like to hear what you like/want changed, would like to see improved upon, etc. It's by no means a finished product.

The first impression I got was that it sounded very "this is the first thing i've did". Basically, I knew exactly where it was going, and those first parts weren't very original to me. It was like "badadaddad da da...badadadada da da" etc. Try changing up those "da da"s to different notes and you progress with the bass line. The "da da"s are what will capture the listener right off the bat. But as you have it, it's very typical and not really original. You want to have a melody up there, not the same two notes. Think about it, if you had your bass progression played on a guitar, and you played over it, would you play those two notes with every chord? No, you gotten move around, be unique.

You have the same problem with the second thing you do, only this time it's just one note. I guess in some cases what you're doing can work, but as it stands, it's just very repetitive, and it begs for more melody. Again, think about - you're using your right hand on the fretboard to open more possibilities for the bass. It's almost always used to created melody, and in this case, it would work perfectly, but you're limiting yourself.

Oh and try using a metronome, it was fairly hard keeping up with it. The third thing you do is also in a different timing. First you have like 7 counts, then you go to 6, then back to 7. Not really sure what you're going for there. Make it smooth if you're going to switch things up.

Wow I wrote a lot for that.

Yeah. I did try to change the time with one part. Thing is I tried to make mood music more then a melodic slash basslineish thing that is all too common in the guitar world with the likes of justin king, i think thats his name, knock on wood, etc etc etc. So basically, I wasn't heading in the cliche direction of bassline/melody. if i wanted to i could and can, but it's boring.

i know what you mean with the typical tapping stuff out there now, and how you didnt wanna just do what they are doing because its cliche and boring, but what you did was still boring after the first 15 seconds. and for the likes of mood music, i love mood music, and you had a good start, just gotta change it up.

and what pat said is right on, about needing to change the high part with the low part...i mean, what you have works, but as pat said gets repetitive.

and also, i must have missed the other parts...is there a way i can get them? cuz i just clicked on the link and it played quiktime in the browser...?
