Guitar Shapes.............

Unread post by Kahn » Sun May 01, 2005 2:53 pm

I've read a lot of stuff online and around several boards, but i wanted to here what you guys think. As far as shape goes, what shapes (dreadnoughts, grand auditorium, jumbos, etc...) give what sound qualities. What is good for recording? What is good for performing? Any help whatsoever. Also, does anyone know the difference in guitar for the Larrivee OM and OMV models?

Dreadnoughts are bassier, GA's have higher treble and cut through other instruments better. A lot of people tend to use Jumbos for 12er's.

I know Dave records and plays D&T shows with Dreads and plays with the band with GA's.

The V might just stand for vintage, referring to tuners, or bracing or soemthing.

I remember reading that Larrivee claims OMV is strummier while OMs are more lead guitar-ish. Oh well. Im going serious guitar shopping in the next week and was looking for a higher-end guitar. I allready have a nice dread and was looking for maybe a taylor X14ce or X15ce. Or possibly a Larrivee OMV-10.

I play gigs on average about once a week, so I was leaning towards a X14ce or the OMV-10. I love the sound of a Gibson Jumbo though. My local Gibson dealer has one of these and I absolutley love it. Im torn.

jumbos are good for punch you in the face bass sounds, they really bring out that good fat sound.

i would probably say the grand auditorium is the most versatile shape

He might record with jumbos, but I know he records with the DM3mD a lot too. When with the band all Ive ever seen him play with lately are his Taylors, all of which are x14 models, which are GA's, not Dreads. So, you are wrong in some of those aspects.

well, the taylor may be a GA but it looks, feels and sounds like a dread.

ive seen him record with the dm3md, but most all guitar i see him record with otherwise are jumbos, the yamaha he used for UTTAD and Crash i think, and BTCS he had a gibson jumbo or two in there. and then the new album ive seen him play a lot of jumbos.

Shut up, it looks, feels, and sounds like a dread. No, it looks, feels and sounds like a fucking GA. I have a taylor 410, and it looks, feels and sounds like a dread because if fucking is one. The guitar is a GA, you were wrong just admit it.

And, btw, him and Ranting were there for all recordings of Dave, so trust theyre foremost expertise
