tapping question

Unread post by mangold » Mon Feb 07, 2005 3:39 pm

im gettin pretty good at tapping, but i get this fucked up double sound because the part of the string on which i am taping that extends from the fret behind my tapping finger to the nut vibrates as well, thus sounding like shit. how do i eliminate this... pat?

That usually happens with higher fretted tapping. It's pretty prominent on the low end strings. (From my experience at least) Sometimes, you can get lucky and not get that much, but other times it's overpowering. (See Kaki King's "Playing with Pink Noise") I guess what I'd tell you is to keep playing, and you might naturally learn some technique that will help.

real helpful pat... ;)

i looked on some bass technique sites and it says to put a scrunchy on the first fret. that works until you play an open or anything non tapped... im very sad

Post a clip, and I can try it, and tell you if it's avoidable. :)

well you can do what regi wooten does which is the scrunchy, and its slideable so when he wants to push them up, he can push them over the nut and play regularly.

When I hit those spots on my guitar, I just make sure I lightly mute the string below where I'm tapping, either with my left hand or with my index finger of my right (and just tapping with my middle or ring rather than the index). Just resting a finger on it is enough.

Usually works for me. I don't have a scrunchy to mute with.

its good in theory, but when you get to songs that require you to tap with more than one finger, thats useless, thanks for the help man

have you looked at a phunkified video to see how he does it and see if he gets the same thing you get or maybe what he does to prevent it?

if someone is willing to post a video showing the technique and explaining it, it'd be great
