HELP WITH TUNING BASS!

Unread post by dpresti » Sun Jan 23, 2005 10:38 pm

okay so i'm picking up bass these days and i'm borrowing my friends 5 string to see if i like it and its tuned (low to high) BEADG

i just found this site.. and i was reading about different bass tunings and i think this is what i'm trying to do ... is tune the 5 string like this..

5 String Bass:

5 String Standard: GDAEB

Drop B: CGDAE

i think the drop b would be easier for me cuz i'm useto the low E being at the top of the neck as opposed to a Low B(i've been playing guitar for a year now)... so if i tune it (from high to low) cgdae, will i break strings or bend the neck? i would think not since this is a "bass tuning"?

help me out guys, i'm new lol thanks

well if the bass is used to BEADG (low to high) i would keep it that way. It could bend if you changed it from that to EADGC. and if are used to guitar the top c will confuse you more than the low b :?

i just dont like the way the low b sounds, its not confusing...

what guage strings should i buy to tune it EADG....

basically i dont like playing a 5 string cuz i'm just starting out and i want the 1st four string to be eadg...

so whatever i gotta do to get it that way..thats what i want.. i really dont care what the 1st string is (meaning the high string)

ok, well, it sounds like selling this and buying a 4 string wouldnt be a bad idea. but consider this: the standard 5 string tuning B E A D G: youve got those high 4, cuz theyre the low four on the guitar, but you say the B is the problem. well, its the exact same relation as a guitar, the 2nd and 1st string: this matches up with the 5 string bass' 4th and 5th strings.

so i say either get over the low B, cuz its not that hard(in fact, it "makes more sense" than guitar tuning cuz all the 5th frets are the open of the higher string as opposed to guitar from G>>B); or sell and buy a 4 string.

i dont like 5 string with the low B for a different reason: i dont ever feel the need to go that low.

Elixirs, mediums, umm duh, that's what bass strings are supposed to tune up to.

btw, if you want to not have the b, just don't string it up for now but that could affect the neck a bit. my advice is stop being such a pussy and get over that extra string before the e :P.
