In the fall of 2001 Dave Matthews learned that 1200 acres of rural farmland in Albemarle County, Virginia was to be divided and offered for sale. The land had been part of a large commercial feedlot operation where cattle were finished before being taken to market. The farm grew corn, made the corn into silage and fed it to cattle in the feeder terminal at the heart of the farm. As is the norm in commercial beef production, cattle nearing market age were trucked in to the feeder terminal and confined in sheds where they were fed corn silage for maximum weight gain before being trucked out again to market.
When Piedmont Environmental Council and other conservation groups in the area expressed concern about the likelihood of the former farmland being further subdivided and developed for non-agricultural use Dave Matthews stepped forward and bought all the property in order to protect it from development.
The new farms presented the Matthews family with a venue to demonstrate their interest in preservation of rural land, protecting the environment, promoting sustainable agricultural methods, supporting local farmer/food consumer relationships, preserving a diversity of plant and animal species and community service. All of these ideas guide the plans for the farms future and the day-to-day activities on the farm.
We are faced with a great challenge. Conversion of the land from its recent history of producing one or two species of genetically modified crops, grown with the regular application of herbicides and pesticides, to an agriculturally diverse landscape farmed in a sustainable, organic manner without dangerous chemicals.
We plan, in the coming years to produce many organically grown farm fresh food items for our neighbors and local community. In addition to the free range eggs we currently offer, we plan to produce grass fed beef, organically grown fruits, vegetables and herbs, and hard and sweet cider.
We are considering an organic, grass based cow and goat dairy. In addition to the food products we will offer, we will also offer programs designed to reunite people with the source of their food through hands on farm experiences like community gardens, therapeutic horticultural programs and animal interaction programs.
