Can i get away with learning Dave's songs w/ an electric?
Hi all
i'm new here...been a huge DMB fan since 1997 since i saw a show in san diego. i want to learn how to play alot of dave's songs....but i just have a cheap squire strat electric and i'm wondering if i should get an acostic guitar. i know he plays electric on everyday, but that is like their worst album anyway so who cares, right? Also, i'm curious to see which songs you guys think are easy for beginners. i can play the stone "riff" and even captian ok, but can't get Ants to sound good, or play WTWE or Two Step even close to fast enough...HELP

I'd say go for it man, you could even turn them into some really cool electric versions if you fuck around with effects or EQ's. I mean you wont really get that true Dave sound, but then only he can. I've played crash on an electric with some reverb and echo-delay and it sounded pretty cool, along with warehouse. Just fuck around and learn the songs then if you get an accoustic you've already put time in. But in the end if you want to get them sounding as close to him, get an accoustic.

hey, i agree with DMBISNATING. i have both accoustic/electric guitars and while it is cool to mess around on the electric/tim shit, you won't be able to get the correct sound. so much to say, lie in our graves, warehouse etc.
but if you can already play the stone intro riff you've already got a pretty good idea of timing and control.
the first song i learned was song that jane likes, then crash. typical situation is easy and dancing nancies will give you an idea of how "the dave chord" works. basically every song that dave writes takes a lot of skill. except proudest monkey. good luck though..........

the more you learn on an acoustic, the easier your electric playing will be. just something to think about.

yes, it is true, strings are easier to push down, neck is skinnier. but if you learn on an electric you'll have a lot harder of a time switching to acoustic down the line than you will if you start on acoustic and switch to electric.johntherevelator wrote:some ppl say its easier to learn on electric than on acoustic
is that true?

thanks guys for the quick responses....this site is gREAT. it sounds like i need to get an acoustic, do you guys have any suggestions on which type would be best. i want to sound as close to DAve as possible.
also, on the stone riff, is it just me or do most of their recordings sound like he is skipping one note in the main riff

A search, or even just digging through old posts, in the Guitar Gear forum would be quite beneficial here.DMBISNATING wrote:it sounds like i need to get an acoustic, do you guys have any suggestions on which type would be best.
Don't worry about that too much, yet. In general, when you first start, your technique will hold back your sound more than the guitar will.i want to sound as close to DAve as possible.
