Are you suprised he plays it on a 12-string? Because he always has...as far as I know...

Also....if on a 6-string, you can tune your high e down to a d and let it ring while you play to get a nice sound out of it...

actually, i am surprised, i havent been to a concert since DMB started playing Grey Street a lot ( i havent been to a concert since Aug 2001), so i am a little surprised, but not much, cause there are a few songs you expect dave to play on a 12

Dave's actually used a 12-string for a lot longer than some people think. I can't really discern it so well on Before These Crowded Streets but I know in the D&T shows he definately uses it for Spoon. If you pay very close attention to the Storytellers recordings you can see a quick shot of his hand strumming what appears to be 12 strings over the hole. As a matter of fact if you have the complete Storytellers downloaded he even makes a reference to pulling it out at a certain point in the show. I know the guitar is a Martin but off the top of my head I'm not sure what model. I know it's mentioned somewhere.

He really started using it heavily on The Lillywhite Sessions and later on Busted Stuff in songs such as Grey Street, Sweet Up and Down (occasionally), JTR, Raven, Big Eyed Fish, Bartender, and some even claim You Never Know though I still have yet to see it.

I have a really REALLY old mp3 of D&T playing an amazing Recently where Tim plays the 12-string. I gave it a shot myself on my Yamaha FG-420 12-string and it was just as cool. If you're playing around I would suggest giving it a try - loads of fun to play and improv.

actually he only has one of the extra string slots with a string in it when he plays that. if you look closely, he's playing his martin twelver, you can tell that because you can see the 12 bridge nuts, but only the low e has the 2nd actave string with it, the other five are all alone. im pretty sure he didnt play with a twelver until he started playing with tim in maybe 97, maybe even later.

Not completely discounting your idea but I'm betting it's a full twelver. I mean why the hell would you play a 12-string with 7-strings in it? It's completely obscure! First of all the gap between your strings would be rediculous if you didn't use all 12 not to mention your bridge pins probably wouldn't stay in because they need the strings. Plus if you listen closely you can hear the octaves and tell by the sound. I've seen the same stills from Storytellers and I've seen the double strings on the B and E as well. I don't know, maybe he wanted to be obscure and play 7-strings on a 12 but it just doesn't seem likely to me.

you're telling me that even after looking at this picture you still think he's got the other strings doubled up? you can't even see the b and e strings, they'd be quite visible if they had their octaves. im fairly certain only the low e has its octave, its harder to tell from pictures, but when you watch the video on a tv, its pretty clear.
