I've watched Dave play "Two Step" several times on Listener Supported and I'm still boggled.
When I watch him play, it doesn't seem like he's muting the D at all but when I record myself playing, the D steps all over the rest of the strings.
I thought he might be palm muting, but it doesn't appear that way either. I thought he might be using his index finger to mute the string but looking at his finger positioning on the DVD, I don't think he is doing that either on most chords except perhaps the 3-1-x-3 and 5-3-x-5 chords. The rest (except for F obviously), while written as 10-8-x-10, for example, are seemingly incorrect based upon my observation of the DVD.
Right now, in order to have the song sound decently, I'm using my middle finger to mute the D as best I can, but it's not the same every chord I play.
Any suggestions? I'm probably doing something wrong, but can't be sure.

let your fingers rest down across the strings instead of making them go straight up from the strings...for the 10-8-x-10 chord, whatever finger you fret the e string with should mute the d string
if you need more help or a better explanation, you can get at me on aim and i'll be glad to talk to you
EDIT: pardon me, what finger is fretting the a string will mute the d, my bad
