Green stuff on rosewood fingerboard

Has anybody ever encountered a green type of thick dusty stuff on your fingerboard...if so, what is the cause of it, and is there a remedy around?

i *BELIEVE* this is the finish coming off from being played so much... mixed with dust. Im assuming you dont put your guitar away after you play it or wipe the strings down after you play... (I dont either... no worries) -- i have a similar problem on my accoustic guitar that my dad bought in the 70's that i still regularly play... some areas omn the neck are really "peeling"... i tried the martin polish stuff to help but it didnt seem to do much... oh well -- anyone else know of a remedy?

Sadly enough i do put it away, and to make things worse i do clean the strings, and not to bash Martin, but its a brand new D-15

Relax ~ my d15 has the same thing...i just think it's because it's a lower end model they dont take quite as much time with it. I'll talk to a friend of mine who's an avid martin fiend and he'll know what to do.

Any chance you have a digital camera so we could check out the "green stuff." That interest me due to also recently purchasing a Martin. I would not want fretboard wear on any new guitar, even if it is a low end Martin. Also, if it is something you are truly concerned about I would contact either a Martin dealear or headquaters and look into taking advantage of your warranty. Whatever you do, dont use lemon oil as a quick fix.

my guess is it's probably just your strings corroding and the the crap from them builds up on the fret board.

i second that

remember to wash your hands before playing guitar and wipe your strings down with a dry smotth cloth every couple of days or so

On any fretboard, especially rosewood, you should clean it whenever you change your strings. Most places recommend lemon seed oil. I'm pretty sure you can buy it at the grocery store. Many companies make fretboard cleaner, that is mostly lemon seed oil. Just run a thin bead all the way up the fingerboard and then take a soft rag and lightly "scrub" off the grime. It removes all the mineral deposits that build up especially around the frets so make sure to use you fingernail behind the cloth to clean next to the frets. I do it on my Takamine and I haven't had any problems with it. It also keeps the rosewood beautiful.

I have heard lemon seed oil is harmful to wood. According to the Martin website they say "We do not recommend using lemon oil on our fingerboards. The acids in lemon oil break down the finish of our guitars. It may also aid the corrosion of the frets and lessen the life of the strings."

Whenever I change my strings, I use a clean rag and some MURPHY's OIL wood cleaner and pick into the different band spots...I have done it for years w/o it affecting the guitars look or preformance...just a thought
