uhhh, I can think of at least 2 artists who have had more good songs (in my opinon), Clapton and zeppelin have cds with more cool songs than dave has ever had. Dave is cool....... but it is time to expand the horizons a little bit. Maybe try playing something other than rythm? My favorite thing to do is put on some song in say Dm (yes my favorite key) and just improvising over it. That is why everyone on these boards had a hard time transfering to electric....... everyone is a rythm player her. Start learning some solos and scales and then make your own solos up and improvise.
Sorry for my little rant, I still love this forum but you guys need to realize dave only does half the picture.......... all he does is play rythm, and he does come up with some awesome chord progressions.

blah. 20-30 bucks? 15 at best buy. the RIAA is a devil enough as it is...
and what exactly is so wrong with rhythm? it's great if you're doing just run-of-the-mill singer/songwriter work, especially if you aren't blessed/cursed with a band. one step at a time...starting to work on lead guitar, but without rhythm the lead might not have anything to go over. there's a lot to get from both sides, and i think you're generalizing us by saying that we don't realize dave does only half the picture. he's a phenomenal rhythm guitarist, and if you go into the Record and Critique section of this board you'll find regulars who are both avid lead and rhythm guitarists.

I'm not going to tell anyone they HAVE to like this album but so far I like what I hear and I'll be sad if I'm the only one. It takes a lot of courage, as an artist, to experiment and try something new. It shakes up all the long time fans because they're afraid of what will become of the band or that the classic sound will leave for good.
To me, for the DMB, it's quite the contrary.
Take the over-debated Everyday for example. It's release was long awaited and the general response was not a positive one. Though I'll admit its not my favorite DMB album, in no way do I hate or loathe it as some have continually pounded into our heads. It was a departure, an experiment, something new, and I think it breathed a little fresh air back into the band despite the controversy. It had its high and low points - just like any other album, but I totally appreciate what it did for the band. It connected with a whole new generation of fans (whether we approve of them or not) and showed us how versatile the band can be.
Now we have Some Devil, not even released, that everyone was excited about. And though we were warned it was going to be new and not the typical DMB - we STILL have people complaining about it. We STILL have people looking for the same old "Crash Into Me" and "Ants Marching". So far I generally like what I hear and give him a big nod for having the courage to try something new. I'll forgoe the song by song criticism until I hear the entire album (that I WILL purchase) and not pass judgement based upon some sub-par radio rips.
So why doesn't everyone sit back, relax, wait for the album, and take it with an open mind? Drop any pretenses you might have and give it a chance....you might even suprise yourself.
Peace,
Kevin

that's not just this board, that's DMB fans in general...you go to a store, you'll see them come in...they'll play mostly DMB with a little bit of Jack Johnson and Howie Day thrown in for fun and that's about it. You play around a bit with them and realize they know open chords and "Dave chords" which aren't even dave's chords, but they don't know why they use them half the time. If they've written anything, it sounds like a half-way Dave song. If you ask them about lead they either say lead sucks or they're just puzzled...it's really a general consensus among DMB fans. To each their own I suppose, but all I know is that after the first year of learning every DMB song perfectly, I moved away to other stuff and it made me an infinitely better guitarist. I'm not saying the above description fits all guitar playing DMB fans, but I'd say 9/10 that I meet fall into this category, and I've met tons the last few years. Oh yeah, and I thought the same thing about the hit song thing...clapton, beatles, etc...???????saleen wrote:uhhh, I can think of at least 2 artists who have had more good songs (in my opinon), Clapton and zeppelin have cds with more cool songs than dave has ever had. first clapton for awhile, then mayer made me realize that there's sense to the madness of making music, at that point I started working with a guy who's considered a top dog in the midwest region, he made me listen to a lot of police stuff for actual structuring of songs, he made me analyze what they were doing as he said, "They know their shit." James Taylor, Eric Clapton and Sting have probably been my biggest influences though in the last few years. I draw a lot from them. I love SRV's passion when he plays but am trying to mesh it with the Clapton style to have this outrageous but still "cool" sound. Then of course there's the Buddy Guy's and Robert Cray's...blues guys...Kenny Burrell is a great understated jazz guitarist...but hmm, also, between the one guy I was already working with, music theory classes, and the other guy who's considered the #1 classical and jazz instructional guy at the university level, I basically just started learning a lot of general stuff about music. Now, it's not like I really have to study someone's style to pick stuff up. I just do. Even lead stuff, if you're playing along to Clapton or SRV, there's a very clear difference between the two that's easy to pick up on and go with. I love what Martin Sexton does solely with an acoustic guitar as well. He blows my mind...Toad the Wet Sprocket and Gin Blossom's...those guys are the epitomy of great electric/acoustic pop/rock. So yeah, tell me if that makes sense at all.isaac wrote:i'm curious gcom, what other stuff did you move on to? i'm looking to venture off from dave now, and it'd be great if you could help out.

I actually liked the everyday stuff though. sure, it wasn't as good as a lot of his other stuff, but I didn't think it was bad. this stuff is just plain bad.rin wrote:well i go away for 2 days and looks what happens...
anyways, i don't like 'em. at all.
i feel like i did when i got the first everyday mp3's. i feel he's capable of much more, so this is disappointing. i'll cross my fingers for the rest of the songs, though.

I'd have to agree with gcum...I think I like everyday songs better than Dave's new single.gcom007 wrote:I actually liked the everyday stuff though. sure, it wasn't as good as a lot of his other stuff, but I didn't think it was bad. this stuff is just plain bad.rin wrote:well i go away for 2 days and looks what happens...

gcom.. you really annoy me. You come and post stuff like you are such the guru.. you are still obtuse. And the fact that you say you aren't.. just means you are still regardless of who else you've been playing.
Anyways, I like the new stuff. I don't listen to dave to further my guitar playing.. I listen to dave for fun, 'cause that's what music is for. To further my guitar playing, I play, 'cause that's what playing is for.
And before you go to the effort of bashing me, I doubt I'll follow-up on this thread, so save yourself the typing.
