The only real difference is when I play four muted I dont hold the chord as long, when I play three I just hold it a little bit longer, each sounds just fine, we dont have to play just like dave, whatever floats your boat

Well I cant do Daves little strum pick manuever so I just pick the notes, sounds fine, but Dave can somehow keep his hand in a strumming motion, hit about two-three strings and mute the ones he doesnt want to ring through, till you can pull that off theres nothing wrong with just picking the individual strings

If anyone cares heres a little clip of me playing it with four muted strums and with three, if angelfire goes down just IM me on aol - jsgksu

http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/jsgksu/ants_comparison.mp3

The first few are my way, then I pause and play it with three mutes, both sound fine, Id like to hear the people who play it with two though, I just cant even get myself to only put that few of mutes in my strumming and wanna hear how it sounds. Let me know what you guys think.

i think they are both wrong. :|

take the 3 strum one, but le tthe chord ring as long as it does in the 4 strum one.

EDIT: i can't explain what i mean any better than that, but listen to the storytellers version of Ants.

I know what you mean Jay, just do a real quick strum like I do on the 4 mute one, pause, then do three strums. But when you really think about it, who gives a fuck, were obsessing over nothing and anyone you play it for is gonna know what youre playing regardless. No ones gonna give you shit for it unless youre on of the 20+ perfectionists on this board. So play it like you want whoever you are, I was trying to help noobs out who cant get the hang of the song alltogether, after they do they cant put whatver spin on it they want. That is my drunken philosophical answer, a thank you.

oh i totally agree...i was just saying, if it's between 3 strums or 4, i go with 3.5. :p

we are all a little too obsessed with playing the songs perfectly i think...but then again, we're guitar gods...mmhmm.... 8)

If you listen any single recording, he does both.. Listen to the first 30 seconds of Ants on L@LC and you'll hear every variation. Personally, I always play 4.

And as for the guy who was like "how do you manage that many??" .. lay your fingers across the strings with your tips sitting on the correct strings for the next chord, and then you don't have to move your fretting hand up and around the neck.
