of course alvarez cant stand up to the really high end taylors or martins
the point i was trying to make was that those taylors and martins are ridiculously overpriced, 2500+ for a guitar is just ridiculous and a ripoff. no advantage it has could be worth that much extra money
i'd much rather have an alvarez and have 2000 dollars left in my bank account than a taylor and no money at all

How expensive do those handmade Alvarez-Yairi get? From what I remember they CAN stack up against Martin/Taylor.
Again, there are other brands that make outstanding guitars that don't have the name recog. that Martin/ Taylor have. *Cough*, Larrivee, Takamine, Lowden, Guild, *Cough*

ive played a larrivee 12er that was pretty nice. i could probably play a guild at a small shop near here but i dont really care if i do or not. ive heard great things about lowden. however i still love Taylors.

Stated about Martin guitars:
I know I have metioned this before several times but I feel I should inform people again. Always take 40% off the list price for a Martin guitar and you will get the price you will pay for it. So a guitar that list for 2500 can be bought for well under 2,000. But still, yes its alot to pay for a guitar but if your going to use it the rest of your life its well worth it. It will only get better over time.2500+ for a guitar is just ridiculous and a ripoff

is this "better over time" thing actually true? i would think that there would be a lot of structural problems as time goes on (bridge lifting, frets grinding down, and maybe even neck warping). is the notion that it will get better over time just a sentimental idea? i dont understand people luthiers and other gear obsessed folks complain about modify older guitars so that they play better and are actually useable.hd28v wrote:Stated about Martin guitars:

guitars are instruments to make music, not antiques

That is true josh, that stuff, COULD, happen, but not with the proper matenience of a guitar... take it in the shop every once in a while, get it fixed up. Make sure you never leave a guitar near an airvent or take it from inside to outside in summer or in winter.. just use common sense and make sure the guitar stays in perfect condition.. it does get better with age.. I played a 1963 gibson acoustic, it sounded better then some of the high end taylors in the same room..

Fatjack....then why the need to bring Alvarez into this conversation when the topic clearly is focused on higher end guitars. I'm not taking sides on any opinions or anything...but your agreeing emphatically that Alvarez's are priced for peope who was a nice guitar for cheap.....yet clearly the original poster is trying to decide between expensive Martin's....not alvarez's.fatjack wrote:EXACTLYshane wrote:thats because Alvarez's arent meant to stand up to Taylors and Martins and other high end guitars. theyre priced for the lower end for people who want a nice guitar for cheap.
And yes, no wood should cost so much money.....but not all wood does what these pieces of wood do.
ALSO, as for Martin's costing too much $$$(not to you fatjack). The 900 series of Taylor is something like $4,000 or $3,500........not much cheaper...if more expensive then most of the high end Martin's also. Take the HD-35...which the orignal poster could get for about $1,900....and that is one of the higher end NON-SPECIAL-EDITION guitars that Martin Makes. So it all works out in the end

he never even bothered to look at alvarez. i've played both of those guitars, and i like alvarez better. but this is all just my opinion, i never really liked any kind of martinjkanter wrote:Fatjack....then why the need to bring Alvarez into this conversation when the topic clearly is focused on higher end guitars. but if you want me to be a little more helpful, get the D-35 dude, the HD-35 just has a bunch of extra shit that doesn't really matter for more than aesthetics
