yep. best tone. I find the elixirs are a little dull on the bass notes and a little tinny on the highs and and the mids a bit too bright for my taste. The D'addarios just seem to sound better all the way thru. so its not just me that thinks this right?gcom007 wrote: D'Addario EJ16

I just don't like how they sound so plasticy I guess...they just sound tinny to me...I guess it's the same reason why I prefer Martin's over Taylor's...sure, the sound is more laid back with d'addario's, but it just sounds more acoustic to me. also, my fingers slide around too much on elixirs, especially the original kind.Lying In My Grave wrote:ugh, thats terrible. putting down elixers for d'addarios? it's like turning down coke for piss. i hate d'addarios, but to each his own.gcom007 wrote:how about never using them again...they suck.
oh yeah, I'm supposed to say something about that being my opinion, so in my humble, yet correct opinion, elixirs suck.

sbhanot, is it peeling so bad that it needs to be removed? mine peeled before, but only a little, so i took some tweezers to them.

not at all, I completely agree with you, I'm all about standard strings, no coating for me, it's the most well rounded sound. sure, you have to change them more often, but they just sound better.gravedigger wrote:yep. best tone. yeah I get what you mean by sounding more acoustic. you get the overtones that give it more of a rich sound. I slide around too much on elixirs too. just a little too slick. my fingertips slide right over the frets when I'm trying to hold some chords. anwyay, to each his own. I'm relatively easy on strings. I don't make em turn green or gum them up near as fast as some people do. my friend fuckin' kills my strings when he plays my guitar. even if he only plays if for like a half hour, I can tell the difference, the strings are all sticky and shit. if its just me playing it, they last quite awhile so I don't have the need for coated strings in that regard. anyway, if you have a nice sounding guitar, any strings will sound great when they're new. and any strings will sound horrible when they're old.
damn, that's a long post for me.
peace

right on about the new string sound! that's always been a plus in my book. when I want to record some stuff, I can just change strings and not feel like I just threw money away. despite elixir's longevity over d'addario's, they still don't sound as good as a fresh set of strings after a week. and I'd play martin's more except I literally wear them out in about 2-3 days...my hands just don't work well with them...rin wrote:i'm with gcom and grave--i hate how elixirs sound. to bright and metallic for my taste. i also use d'addarios, sometimes martins. yeah, you gotta change them more, but that just means you get that new string sound more often.
go dores.

*shrugs* i've been playing nylon for the past 4 years, so i can't much help you out, but my 414 came with nano's and i'm loving them. there's a lot more squeaking, but that's to be expected with lighter coating.
some tips for making sure your strings last longer is to wash your hands and dry 'em before playing. this helps a lot...and also wipe your strings after you play. you can pinch the strings between an old cotton t-shirt and just rub along each individual string to wipe 'em, and then go over the tops, which'll keep both your strings and your fingerboard clean.

Thats happened to me also, just due to I play a hell of a lot... from the pics I sometimes use(don't always use my .60's, sometimes use dava control picks when i can't find the .60's) so yes, i've seen this happen, doesn't effect the sound for me at all.. btw I use polywebbed..

I have seen that happen before.. it correlates to how much you play with a pick, I think.. I don't really see how fingers would ever tear at the coating, but a pick makes sense.. it happens to me all the time, and I don't worry about it. If they are just kinda "hairy" then it is cool, it doesn't really hurt the sound by that point; you strings are already kinda mellowing out in tone and the hairiness won't do much to the sound. If it is more than that, you need to change your strings because the coating is messed up and will interfere with your tone. And, if you are fingerpicking and can't stand the way they feel now, then you should change them as well.

I have the same prob with the Elixirs both on the Nano and Ploy but it only happens on the D string. I love the way the nano's feel but they do sound dull in the bass strings until they get broken in. But the last time I had nanos the G uh string broke (always the damn G) after only 2 weeks of having them on so I went back to the D'Addario EXP17's which sound great but don't have the nanoweb feel that I love but they'll last longer. And for people who eat through strings because either they sweat alot or too much acid in their fingers, coated strings are the only choice unless you want green fingers and green strings, and the ladies don't find that to hot.

The sp+'s have this coating on them that make them sound a tad bit better and they're much more easier to slide on then normal sp's. Ever since I got a Martin i've been a Martin maniac, from my pics to my strings and they all do their job wonderful... at least in my opinion.sbhanot wrote:I mean, I really like them, and the lack of coating doesn't hurt the sound, but i just think it looks badMaybe just scrubbing them - I like Martin SP's a lot too - is the SP+ just like a longer lasting model or something?

i have always thought of the elixirs sounding a bit more broken in and less tinny than standard strings. i dislike the "new string" tinny tone. so the quicker i get the strings broken in the better and elixirs just start out a more "broken in" cuz they already have that coating on it. it's the same reason i use mediums cuz they sound a bit darker.
also i just can't stand the string noise. it's like listening to someone screaching while playing.
but again if you like the added screaches and sound of finger movement then that's great. if you like new string sound, right on.
and to answer the question, i have seen elixirs get kinda frayed. it is normal around common notes (like the G on the low e string) and around where you strum. don't worry about it. it doesn't really affect tone to a great degree and as mentioned, is a good guage that it is time to change your strings. word.
