I've heard the cheap Breedloves are the best guitars in the price range, but I know that Alvarez makes great guitars.

I just brought a Breedlove AD25/SM for $1000 canadian. I chose it over the Larrivee D-03 and an Alvarez (forget the model) in that pricerange. The sound on this thing is perfect, i like 'em really bassy and the mahogany on this one is beautiful.
the "cheap" Breedloves are called the Atlas series, made in Korea.

buy a Martin D-18 great all around guitar for around $1000 w/ nice bass support for dave's style

The cheapest I have seen a new D-18 was $1450....although used is a good option.

My favorite acoustic guitars are Seagull. They have excellent sound and are extremely durable. You will get your money's worth guaranteed. Go play some and try them for yourself. Ebay has great deals on them too.
