Carter Beauford Injured During Drum Solo
April 1st, 2005

Beauford with eye patchCharlottesville, VA -- Carter Beauford was seriously injured during an extended Hello Again solo a publicist for the percussionist said.

The accident took place Thursday, March 31st in the main practice area of Dave Matthews Band's new studio in Charlottesville, Virginia. The band had been practicing for the upcoming New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Immediately following the incident, Beauford was rushed to the Martha Jefferson Hospital where he was examined by ophthalmologist Dr. Gitanjali Beshara.

"When Mr. Beauford came in I was concerned by the possibility of a central corneal wound--I've never had to remove a drumstick from an eye socket before. He was in such a hurry to get back to the studio to 'finish his solo.' I'm not sure he was aware of how serious the trauma was."

When asked how Beauford was as a patient, Beshara said, "Mr. Beauford was very uncooperative, repeating over and over that the solo wasn't over yet, and that he was going to fix it with some techniques he had picked up from NILE drummer Pete Hammoura."

"His band mate, LeRoi Moore, was trying to calm him down, but Beauford insisted he be discharged immediately. The man was suffering from serious vitreous hemorrhaging." said Dr. Beshara. Carter was indignant: "I don't care if my eye has fallen out on the damn floor, let me finish my solo!"

Eye injury diagramUpon discharge from Martha Jefferson Hospital, Carter described the accident, "It happened in a flash. I was trying to link two sections of the Hello Again solo. This section is complicated because I switch from an open-handed blast beat fill into a 'clave' rhythm. I'm not sure what happened, somehow I, I--lost control."

Dave Matthews Band is gearing up for the start of their 2005 summer tour following their first tour in Australia.

"The doctor says that I have to take it easy for a few days, then the patch can come off. I'm actually thinking about wearing it at the Randal's Island shows as part of the 'Island Getaway' theme. Butch said he'd drape a jolly roger flag over his Hammond. Fonz said all that was 'wiggity-wack.'" said Beauford.

Listen to an example of the Hello Again solo.

Though Crater is expected to make a full recovery, he'll be attending band practice with bongos for the next few weeks until his vision is completely straightened out. "Roi is really looking out for me, he even offered to lend me a pair of his darkened shop glasses for protection."

Dr. Beshara said, "In most cases the greatest danger to the eye arises from objects of a relatively small size traveling at a high velocity. Clearly Mr. Beauford's drumsticks were moving very fast, perhaps even at light speed."
I wondered if this was an april fools joke. Carter is way to damn good to fuck up his eye in a song he has played hundreds of times in the past year.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
