These are just the standard major scale box patters. You're also learning the modes of the major scale, minor being one of them.

This is the most common way to start learning scales. I always liked learning them this way because it's really visual but there are some pitfalls with these standard boxes. If you practice them you should be aware of where you are within the scale. You don't have to go overboard and learn what every degree is but you should at least have the root, 3rd, and 5th down.
yup, my guitar teacher talks like that, im going deeper into theory alot now. these box things are what i used with my old teach.

i don't really know my scales i'm more of a rhythm guitar..but when i got my new loop pedal i am kinda needing to learn how to solo...I don't understand how to take one scale pattern and move it all around the fretboard...for example a pentatonic scale....does this make sense the question i am asking?

hmm.. just how their is an
"R" on my diagrams.. there is one in pentatonic ditties..
read what i wrote about moving them around with the root note and all that..
(read slow)
and then ask more questions... i think its all explained in there. (the pentatonics are just like my major scale thing except with less notes)
5 notes (hence penta) rather than 7 notes per scale.

i just want to understand how to move the scale shapes to fit another key...and how to extend the scale shape instead of just play 2 notes per string which the pentatonic seemed to show

at the bottom of my diagram .. all the shapes fit together.. that has all the possible frets that can be used for every string on it..
see what i mean?
If you want to move the scale shapes to fit another key.. make the "R" align with the root note of the Key of the other song. Such as a song in the Key of D the root note is a D. On the diagram it shows a C

yupper C.. tranman beat me!
you also know that because the chords F, C, and G dont have any sharps or flats and neither does the C scale! tra la la
plus.. it sounds pretty when it ends on C and major scales always sound pretty when ending on their I chord.

I had to learn scales and modes by writing every single one on staff paper.. it was tedious, but I learned a lot from doing it

Ohhh ya.. dont i know about that tediousness! The stuff i have is not the best way to learn scales at ALL but it does help the ones who dont know anything and need a starter.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion. That is THE way to learn scales. Almost every book on soloing will present them like that. It's the beggining of a multi step process though. It will familiarize you with the notes but you have to turn them into melody. The best excercise for that is scale sequences such as:

This one ascends in thirds.
