the only lower end guitar that I've purchased that has sounded half way decent is a Taylor Big Baby ($350)...other than that, anything low end is often over-built, heavily braced, heavily finished, have excess glues and wood fillers, and is made from plywood or laminates...

a quality guitar uses quality woods, quality materials and appointments, is lightly braced, has a thin finish, and is a very delicate instrument to name a very few...(that's why things such as humidity are so important!!!)

and dont be fooled by the salesguy who says "it's a solid spruce top", cause that grade of spruce is probably equivalent to that found in a rotting spruce tree in your back yard...
i guess you've played every guitar under 300 dollars... fact of the mattter is thats his budget, dont tell him to save more or that he cant afford anything half decent with the money hes got. the things i have bolded in your post are ussually true, but that doesnt mean you cant make a decent economy guitar with those materials. just give him your opinion on what he asked for man. if you think he cant purchase a playable instrument for that price then say so. i still say for that pricerange, imo a washburn is the best buy

i did. and by not bolding it i was disagreeing with you. you cant assume that all washburns, jasmines, and fender acoustics under 250 are crap. you're generalizing not to mention offending him because he can only afford a cheaper guitar

we all start with a crappy guitar, no doubt about it...but if this dude wants to make an actual upgrade, washburns, jasmines and fender acoustics are not where it's at. it's better to save your money and purchase a quality guitar that gets you quality years of playing with a quality sound...

i've never played a model by any of those manufacturers that remotely sounded good, and that is not in comparison to a Martin, Collings, Larrivee, Lakewood, etc...that's just hearing a guitar for what it is....

Well if its a first go ahead and buy a low end. But for an upgrade at that price i would say save another hundred and buy a kit. Then add a pickup after you finished the kit. You can buy a kit with taylor quality materials for about 400. That is if you dont screw up when you make it.

But nvmd that. You would have to buy tools too, so it might not be worth it.

The key for a first guitar is that it stays in tune and has a playable neck. Other than that a beginner wouldn't really notice the difference in sound until he plays something nice. My first guitar was a Washburn D-10S and it was exactly what a beginner needs. It was very playable, had good intonation and stayed in tune. The first time I strummed my Larrivee there was no doubt that it was a far better guitar, but when I was first learning I thought my Washburn sounded great.
