Daves Strumming hand

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I think with a year under your belt, you could play 80% of Dave, more or less.

I disagree. In order to make it sound just like Dave is different than being able to "play dave."

gotta love dave's style, his choice of chords makes fingerpicking sound great and an ease especially in songs like billies, i dont know how to explain those chords, u know when he s playing the bass note on the low e string and the rest just flows on the strings below... or above... im not sure what the correct statement would be

Which basically consists of knowing how to count music, make the proper rests, etc.

All this stuff about "proper fingers" and such is bullshit. From what I can tell, and I really don't pay attention much to the way Dave fingers his chords, beings I've had training, and it's mostly common sense anyway, is ludicrous. That's why there are so many Dave-wannabes around. Every open mic session on the planet is 3/4, if not more, full of songs trying to be written in Dave's style, followed by an excessive amount of Dave covers, and perhaps a few other folksy things if you're lucky. It's ridiculous. I like learning about Dave, I like reading up on his stuff and peoples opinions on it, and I like playing Dave's songs (which aren't as difficult as it's amde out to be; he's a creative guy and I'll give him that, and I admire his percussive style, which too many of you believe he "created" and, not to repeat myself, "originated" or something). But you're going to be one lousy musician if you spend all your time on Dave and Daveish band specifically and waste away you're creative intuition on trying to play chords "like Dave" and write riffs and lyrics "like Dave." Sure you might come up with a few good things, but in the end, anyone you try to display your stuff too that isn't a big Dave fan who'll say, "Cool! That sounds like Dave!" is going to think, "Wow, that's a total Dave Matthews ripoff."

Which, to be honest, is what it is.

i think he was saying that theres tons of people (especially on these boards) that can play all of DMBs songs, but noone can really get that perfect crisp sound that dave somehow manages to pull off within and throughout everysong he plays on stage, not just his knowledge or idea of music. i admit we've got some really talented musicians on these boards and a lot of them are way more talented than dave but the guy has a gift that requires a great amount of effort to match, i know i've got quite a ways to go

I think he was saying....

Don't spend all your time trying to learn to play just like Dave because you'll limit yourself as a guitarist. Or something like that...

Maybe you know people like that, But the people I know that like dave aren't anything like that. me and ryan(everydaydmbfan) played dmb covers every open mic night we went to, because people knew them(most of the time) and our originals we had were nothing even close to dave's style. You stereotype people way too much and i think it's bullshit. So what if someone wants to write like dave? It's their fucking choice. Some people write just to write, not to try and become famous. Musicians can copy other musicians style. You do it, I do it, everyone does it. What's the point of playing music if you can't do it how you want to?

You can write however you want, but don't expect to get anywhere with it. And I can understand if you don't care if you go anywhere it. That's fine. Copy Dave if it pleases you. But I think most of my rant emerged from the ridiculous number of bands imitating Dave and then bothering to charge a price while hunting around for a manager with that already-done (and done right) bullshit. And you're not going to improve as a musician, either. So don't expect to.

But if you're okay with that, fine, play nothing but Dave's songs and sit in your room trying to write like him.
