The trick is to learn to hammer on with your index while holding on to the 2x44 chord.
I often just hammer on with the part that is between my palm and my first knuckle on the finger.

Here is a video from a Jason Mraz website. Not only is this a great version of the song but you can hear the hammer-ons alot better becuase dave mostly playing by himself. Its just much easier to hear what he is playing on this video than just listening to L@LC.
