jesus guys. he's talking about that whole riff the whole band plays.

its something like...7x9, 8x10, 10x12, 7x9...7x9, 8x10, 12x14, 10x12...7x9, 8x10, 10x12, 7x9...8x10 8x10, 7x9, 5x7,8x10 8x10, 7x9, 5x7, 8x10 8x10, 7x9, 5x7....3x5.

i was wondering for a while if dave did that too. and this year at the concert i saw him do that. so yea. hope that's what you're looking for.

and filmdude, it used to be hani like matty said. written for a sout african rights activist who was killed (chris hani).

Ok, so Dave wrote #34 with Miguel Valdez, and then after Valdez's death in 1993, Matthews dedicated it to him. Valdez played with the band often between 1991 and 1993. #34 originally had lyrics, but appeared on the album lyricless as an instrumental. That's the story of #34. #36, was a death lament to Hani, but it sounded too happy. So, he changed the words.

Uh no. the first time they did #36 it was way to dark and "political" it was calling out the people who killed hani, and pretty graphically described the murder. it was changed to be more upbeat lyrically, and from what i understand the chant is supposed to be "hani hani, come and dance with me".

you're half right. the chant USED to be hani hani. but since it didn't fit with the new upbeat happy song, they changed it to honey honey. but i still sing hani hani. haha.

Woops! I can see why you were disagreeing with me, I mistyped. I meant that the song sounded too happy "musically" to fit with the words, so he changed the lyrics. Or were you disagreeing with filmdude?

wasn't #34 written by haines fullerton with dave? he's one of the members of the deal. he commited suicide some time ago. he has a credit for it anyway.

Just to add a few things. I got the #36 thing for Step Into the Light.

First, #34 was recorded with lyrics in the studio, but they scrapped them during the process of recording.

Now, #36. After Hani died, Dave thought they should write a song about his death, but try to do it more positive and happy way. But they lyrics weren't working with their happy groove. So over time, the original lyrics slowly faded, and Hani was eventualy just replaced with Honey.

Another lyrical term that switched over time is in Two Step. Up and onto the Crash album, he sang, "Hey Helena," and now it's, "Hey Honey."

"hey, My love" and he still says the "Hey, Helena" line.
