thats my exact opinion and situation.jsgksu wrote:my uncles been playing for like 30 years, Ive been playing for 3, he watches me play a dave song and thinks Im a prodigy, he thinks Im amazing and way better than him. I just think older people arent used to that style and the hands all over the fret board and arent used to it and think were amazing. My uncle is way better than me weather he knows it or not. I refuse to believe I could be better than someone whos been playing for 30+ years
Am I weird?

To answer your question, yes you're wierd.

Just remember there will always be someone better than you, so keep trying to make your own style. Make a name for yourself by doing something that has never been done.

one thing i dont like about some good guitarist is when guys go solo. solo as in youre the only one playing on stage. no matter how good you are, youre not good enough to be without a band. you can be as good as you want on the guitar but the true measure of a musican is what they do with other musicians.

I disagree with you there. You should check out some of the guitarist's I put in the sticky. I'll be amazed if you came back saying they were not good enough to be playing solo.i am sam2 wrote:one thing i dont like about some good guitarist is when guys go solo. solo as in youre the only one playing on stage. no matter how good you are, youre not good enough to be without a band. you can be as good as you want on the guitar but the true measure of a musican is what they do with other musicians.
I don't see how being without an implicit rhythm section make you less of a musician?
Yes, I think playing in a band is very important in any musicians development but a great guitarist might have been there and done that. There's a lot of crap that comes along with being in a band and if you eventually feel more satisfied in a solo setting I don't see anything wrong with it.
Not everyone wants to rock out with a band either. There are people(I consider myself one) who prefer something more intimate.
Maybe there just trying to support what your doing.filmdude100cms wrote:im bassically asking if its weird for a 14 year old to be able to play allot of dave. i dont care if anyone thinks or says im good, i could be tim reynolds for all i care, and still be trying to get better.
like my family would say wow your pretty good, but i dont listen to them they cant play they dont know anything. but when my friends and stuff who i think are much better than me say it, just from like a few dave songs, it kinda was weird.... cause im not a great guitarist, my friend daniel is a great guitarist, i am not.
If your 5 year old son came to you with a painting he did in class that day you would tell him how great it is even if it's not.
People are far less critical when your younger. It sounds like your confused by that more than you were "fishing for compliments".
You can always count on yourself when looking for non bias opinions. Of course you can't keep on making crappy recordings and expecting to learn anything from them so I would invest in a decent little recording set-up. Recording yourself will help you more than you'll ever know but you need to be honest and critical as well as supportive.
PM me if you want some advice on recording.
Peace
I feel you man I'm fifteen years old. And not to be arrogant but I havent MET many people better than me. I can think of one. Now of course Dave and Tim and all them are ten times better than I am but I had the problem before with thinking people said I was good just to spare my feelings. But I played an original of mine at a talent show. A lot of the other acts were either really good or really bad. And every person in the room told me they liked mine the best. People were singing the song the rest of the night.
Now I didnt say that to be cocky but, it really happened. I taught myself and am better than people who have been playing for five years. I just have more perserverence (sp?). Its not really how long you have been playing its how much time you put into it.
I think older guitarists think younger people rock more is because in like the 60s guitarists really werent that good. I mean I love the Beatles but their guitar parts are so easy. Its all chords, its the same with Elvis.

I'm not saying this to be mean, and it is true, but just never be satisfied and always move forward. If you ever think you're good enough to brag, don't and watch someone like Chet Atkins play (or anyone more skilled than yourself). Actually, no one should ever seriously brag 'cause you just look like an ass and it doesn't matter how good you are. :/

and even if he is fishing for compliments who the hell cares.
