Whats with some guitar players using their thumbs?

he's not actually using his thumb to fret a note, its just there when he adjust his wrists for certain chord formations, like DThreeDaysDwn wrote:Ever watched Dave play?
He uses his thumb in several songs...
Anytime he does a standard D chord he uses his thumb on the 2nd fret.
He also sometimes uses it in Rapunzel during the verse, and used to use it in LLD.
It's not poor guitarmanship to use your thumb...

I dont have a prob w/ people using their thumb. I wouldnt be able to play #40 without it
