Gibson ES 335 vs PRS

Unread post by DRMusic » Mon May 23, 2005 10:42 pm

here's my deal. i graduated from college (UMaryland) last weekend. i was lucky to receive a couple of checks as gifts from friends and family. i've been wanting a new guitar for years now, and i finally have the funds to put towards a new axe.

i have always wanted a Gibson ES 335. if i could i'd go for a Lucille. however, over the past few months i've been sweating the PRS lineup. i saw PRS and his band in Chestertown, MD, 2 months back and was very turned on to his guitars.

my question is what guitar would you all choose and why? i'd love to hear from those of you that actually have one or both of these guitars. i was reading fatjack's post on his 335 and it seems he really likes his guitar. i'm not sure what PRS i would want. when all is said and done i'll have around $2500 to put towards the new guitar.

i'll be using the guitar for blues and jazz mostly. bb kind has always been my idol, so i think that's why i'm attracted to the Lucille. however, there are times i may want to rock out, or plug in a few pedals and play with my tone(s).

thanks in advance for the advice. :D

what kind of strings would you all recommend to get a good jazzy/bluesy tone out of a 335?

You can get really heavy sounds out of any guitar, with pedals and amps and whatnot, but to get that really sweet hollowbody tone you need a hollowbody. So for what you described I'd go with the 335.

I think Josh got his for just under $2k, and he would know whether that's a good price, so it seems like that's good to me. You can probably haggle the price down a bit or get some extras thrown in.
