thoughts on new cd
Alrighty, here's my review, after many listens.
Dreamgirl - Fantastic intro. My friend who is not a dave fan said this song was great within the first five seconds. He also loves the album by the way. Best part is the breakdown with "just as i've found my footing, here you come agaaaaaain". The outro is great too, really adds a little something. The lyrics are little lame at times, but they can be overlooked.
Old Dirt Hill - Possibly my least favorite on the album. Still a good tune though. I think it runs a little long; it could be a minute or two shorter. I think it's one of the longest on there though? Carter's vocals are tolerable, but the only lyrics i really don't like here is the "training wheels" line. Great fretless (upright i believe!) work/fills by stefan though.
Stand Up (For It) - Great tune. It's a perfect chant song. Not very deep or anything, but still great to turn up and blast in the car. I like the guitar riff too. I just hope we don't create some weird gesture for when this song is played live, like throwing our hands up in the air for every time dave says "stand up!" Cos that would be lame.
American Baby Intro - I love how the drums blend in with the guns and bombs. The 2 or 3 lyrics are great when it picks up in the middle. It's okay how it comes back down before AB.
American Baby - Fine, good ending jam, specially live. All about the "crash...whooo!!" outro.
Smooth Rider - Great tune, fitting title. I'd have liked this one to be a little longer. Reminded me of SRV first time i heard it. Just a grooving song, makes your head move side to side.
Everybody Wake Up (Our Finest Hour Arrives) - I like this one a lot, despite it being very electric. The intro is a little off, almost as if it's out of tune. But the lyrics are good, i think the "pig dressed in his finest fine" section is one of the highlights of the album. Also good to crank in the car on a sunny day.
Out Of My Hands - Good tune after a few listens. I like how first carter then stefan come in. THe best part is the last "now our finest hour arrives" section, the part featured in the clip, with all three of them playing.
Hello Again - Oh stop complaining. Still a rockin song. I like the "here we go" dave adds before one of the choruses. His voice has an effect on it, but its alright. the segue is very awkward though, good thing it won't be played live.
Louisiana Bayou - Probably my favorite song on the cd. I love dave's voice, it's almost like he's scatting, but with words. The music and words are great, plus the length is perfect too. And it gets stuck in your head, but in a good way.
Stolen Away On 55th & 3rd - Actually, this song and Old Dirt Hill might be tied for my least favorite song. It's still sweet though. I think it's a little boring?
You Might Die Trying - Great song. I'm glad they haven't totally forgotten the dmb formula of "dave solo riff then the band joins in." I like roi's sax work on this one too.
Steady As We Go - Good slow song. I'm glad they have the big explosion at the end, it makes the song a lot better.
Hunger For The Great Light - Great intro, great song. I dunno if i like that it ends the album though. But stefan did a good job creating a song based on a guitar riff, even though he's a bassist.
I love the lyrics too, because i love blowing my gf's mind. AH HA!

most all of these songs have potential live
You might die trying is freek'n sweet though. especailly that live version on VH1.
Bayou is good live too
a lot of these i think will be much better once live where there's no loop, and NO ELECTRIC DRUM

YMDT is my favorite song on the new disc for now. It doesn't really go anywhere "big" if that means anything to you. Kind of like earlier DMB songs build and build and then release, this song seems to never build by stay that same flatline - still a great song, I really enjoy it.gravesRR7 wrote:most all of these songs have potential live

Anyway, didn't we talk about how albums should have some continuity throughout the entire setlist? For example, they had to choose between a bunch of songs they wrote which would ultimately make this album.
IM not seeing the continuity or flow from one song to the next. Anybody else notice that? Or was this already mentioned.

Not at all. Metallica tried to make a sound that would get them popular again, atleast in my opinion. DMB is experimental, and always have beenhofdaddy wrote:The only comparison I can think of is...

eh eh. St Anger was the band going with a different sound, a different direction. They were trying to not fit the mold of every other aging metal band.DMBFan63 wrote:Not at all. DMB again(with Stand Up) tried doing something a little different themselves so they didn't sound like the other studio albums.

I don't know why you always gotta stir up shit with me. maybe it's cause I call your mistakes like you like to do with everyone else including myself. Apparently putz is some horrible word to you. If it is then grow a spine and suck it up. If you wanna continue PM me or drive to Cleveland and we can handle this like gentlemen.

I was watching an old interview last night with the band done in Europe I think (its on my soulseek files) and Dave was saying how they never want to stop changing because they never had a set sound they were going for and they always want to keep it new and evolve.
i think that says it all, they just dont want to write another crash or BTCS.

Ehh I dont really know whats happened here. I've never heard a perfect album, with Crash being a possible exception. Everybody has their own specific taste, and it will be impossible to make an album that satisfies everyones at once.
Im not saying that its wrong to discuss the album or anything, just that it seems to me people had been expecting the perfect album.
Personally, i think the album has some good parts and some not so good parts.
And even if i hated every single note played on the album, I'd still bow before the greatest living musician if i saw him in reallife.
