Fender or Marshall

Unread post by Rweden36 » Sat Apr 16, 2005 7:42 pm

Howdy, i'm still fairly new to this whole electric world of guitar, I play my friend's electrics and amps. Anyways i've finally decided to buy my own stuff and I'd like some opinions. I'm currently saving up for a Deluxe Nashville telecaster, which I'll be getting in the next few weeks. but that's beside the point. The question is, what amp is better? The two amps i've been looking at are the Fender Frontman 25R, and the Marshall MG15CDR. They are both the same price, and the fender a 25 watt and the Marshalls a 15. Now I know the saying that an electric guitar is only as good as the amp you play out of it, but I only need a little practice amp. For gigs I use either my friends Fender Deluxe, or Princeton. My logic is that if there the same price and the marshall has less watts then it's a higher quality, but that's only my little acoustic brain's logic :D Any feed back would be greatly appreciated, and if you know of any other good practice amps for the same price, let me know. Thanks

I just have 3 things to say

Fender Fender Fender

Also, if you want something really affordable that sounds great and is a tube amp, check out the Fender Blues Junior. I have one and it is excelent. If you want a tiny portable amp, you can't go wrong with a little Pignose (I have as well and it's great).

But again . . .

FENDER ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

Also, check out ebay. You may be able to find a tube amp in your price range there. Thats how I got my 65 Twin reverb reissue.

Marshalls typicaly give out a harsher tone drier. IMO they are good if you want to go heavy distortion. You can get a Fender to be crunchy, but there is something about Fenders that give it this just great warm feeling, even when you go harsh. Fenders are more durable too.

I don't want heavy distortion. Personally i've never been able to get a warm tube amp distortion out my friends fender deluxe, but i've played a JCM800 and the distortion sounded too 80's metal like, So I think i'm leaning towards the fender, thanks for feedback everyone.

I played a friends Marshall AVT100 today and it blew me away. We had it turned to 4 and my ears were ringing afterwards.

I used to have a Fender Ultimate Chorus. The orignal, not the one with the shitty DSP effects. It was a decent amp for clean sounding stuff, but anything overdriven, even stompboxes, sounded muddy through it.

I would say Marshall. But if I'm playing an electric, I'm playing metal. Marshall is the #1 amp for metal IMO. If you're looking for mild overdrive, modulation, or just clean sounds, Fender may be better.

The chorus on the Ultimate Chorus is justly named, I will say that much.

thank you for that, I definitly won't be playing metal so that really helps me. I also don't really need a loud amp, so i'm pretty sure i'm going to go with the fender.

Do you like Metal distortion or a warmer lighter distortion?

Well, unfortunately this does sound like a situation where you will need to track down the two amps you are comparing at a music store, and test both of them.

To elaborate further on my previous comments, I do think Marshalls are a better "all around" amp. Like I said, I had a Fender Ultimate Chorus, that sucked for metal, but was great for blues, or just a mild overdrive. On my friends Marshall yesterday, I have a ESP/LTD KH-602, which is built for metal and speed, and that's what I was playing. I was also playing my epi Les Paul through the amp. The crunch of the amp was unbelieveable, and I didn't even need to use any of my own stompboxes.

My friend, who owns the amp, has an American Strat, and he's into funk, blues, and jazzy stuff. He bought the amp, and he loves it. He is not a metalhead.

My comments last night were imcomplete, my main point is that I feel Marshall's are more all around amps, while Fender's can be limited as far as sound reproduction. That is, at least from my experience.

My brother in law also has a Marshall combo, which he loves. He plays a lot of metal, again, but he is also into SRV, and plays tons of SRV songs, which sound unbelievable through his Marshall.

I still suggest comparing the two amps for yourself if you can at a music store, that is the only way to really decide. We could all go back and forth saying "Marshalls are great for this reason" and "Fenders are great for this reason". Too many opinions from too many different people will just confuse you.
