DMB tab books
I got into this argument with a friend. I say that the tab books are not EXACTLY what Dave plays. They very well could be what he plays, but the tabs are just what the company/the person tabbing think they are. He says they are all exactly chord for chord, note for note exact. We made a bet, so I have to provide credible proof. Am I even right at all? By the way there is a case of tall boys at stake. thanks guys.

i'm pretty sure you're right. they are not 100% accurate, you can prove that to him by showing him a dvd of dave playing, and just be like "booo-ya, i told you, I TOLD YOU!!"

Yeah, the tab books do it by ear, guys like kanter do it by videos.

Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead

No tab book is going to be 100% accurate even if it is approved by the artist themselves. I recently saw an interview with Tommy Emmanuel about the transcriptions of his tab book for the album Only. He checked and approved all the tab but would only say that it was correct at the time it was published. In other words everytime he played a song it changed a little and the song evolved.
The studio stuff will be closest but live stuff will always vary. I have been playing for more years than I care to remember and often find different ways of playing songs I have played for more than a decade!! It is very easy to go into auto pilot while playing Mustang Sally for the 1000th time (I really hate that tune!!
) so I try and find different ways of playing it. I am sure, within reason, Dave does the same.
I would suggest using the tab as a way of giving you a guide to how the song was originally played. You may be happier with different fingerings or even fretting in different positions. Above all, enjoy playing the songs whether note for note or not.

The books are not what Dave plays.
The books are what is being played on the actual recording.
For example:
The Crash book has the tab for all of the guitar lines being played on the Crash studio track of #41. Dave plays a completely different guitar part when they perform the song live. So the tab in the book will not be what Dave plays.
Most of the studio guitar parts are played by Tim Reynolds. The people from Cherry Lane (guitar tab publishing company) listen to the songs, tab out what they hear, have several different musicians approve/disapprove the work, redo it, and eventually put it out in the books. Obviously, there is going to be human error in this process.
As a result, I would estimate the books are about 90-95% correct as to what is being played on their respective studio tracks, and about 60-70% correct as to what Dave plays live.
