Submission: Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors Tab (3-23-93)

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Submission: Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors Tab (3-23-93)

Unread post by HaikuWarriors41 » Sun Feb 29, 2004 12:44 am

I've been desperately trying to find an accurate tab of this tune for years. I've scoured countless sites, none of which have been able to provide me with a tab that synched, chord for chord, with my favorite recording of the song, the definitive Big League Chew performance. So tonight, after years of searching to no avail, I sat down and tabbed it myself. This process entailed slowing the nasty breakdowns to 20% of their original speed and building those ugly chords note by note, such that I was sure that they reached that level of atonal perfection I'd been striving for. Hope this new tab helps those who've been looking for that exact match (and could possibly be used to fill in the blank HHW page on the site ;)!

Code: Select all

Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors
As performed March 23rd, 1993 at Trax

Intro:

E: --------
B: ---3----
G: ---4----
D: --------
A: ---2----
E: --------

Verse:

E: ---------------|---------------|
B: ---3--3--3--3--|---3--3--3--2--|
G: ---4--4--4--4--|---2--2--4--2--|
D: ---------------|---------------|
A: ---2--2--2--2--|------------0--|
E: ---------------|---2--2--3-----|

OR

E: ---------------|----------------|
B: ---3--3--3--3--|---3--3--3--5---|
G: ---4--4--4--4--|---2--2--4--6---|
D: ---------------|----------------|
A: ---2--2--2--2--|----------------|
E: ---------------|---2--2--3--5---|

Chorus:

E: -----------(0)-|----------------|
B: ---7--7--5--2--|---4--4--4--4---|
G: ---6--6--4--3--|---3--3--3--3---|
D: ---------------|----------------| x2
A: ---5--5--4--1--|---2--2--2--2---|
E: ---------------|----------------|

The C#min7 (x4x45x) and Bmaj7 (x2x34x) can be replaced by C#min (x4x65x) and B (x2x44x) to taste, however I prefer leaving the sevens in.

Breakdown:

E: --------(6)----|-----------------------|------------------------|
B: ---7--5--6--4--|---2-------------------|------------------------|
G: ---6--4--3--2--|---3----4---4---3/4----|---2--2--2--2--2--2--1--|
D: ---------4-----|-------2---2--------0--|---0--0--0--0--0--0--2--|
A: ---5--4--------|---1--0----------------|---------------------2--|
E: ------------1--|----------4-----2/3----|---2--2--2--1--1--1--0--|

Ending:
               *
E: ---------6-----|-----------------------------|
B: ---7--5--6--0--|---2-------------------------|
G: ---6--4--3-----|---3----4----4---4--2--2--1--|
D: ---------4-----|-------2----2----0--0--0--2--|
A: ---5--4-----2--|---1--0-------------------2--|
E: ------------1--|-----------4-----3--2--1--0--|

* - I let this chord sustain for ages, trying to pick out the notes Dave's playing, and this is what I came up with. It sounds miserable when he plays it, and it sounds equally bad when I play it. I highly suggest using the F7 found directly above it (1xx24x) instead, as I imagine that that's what he was going for.
Form (with 3-23-93 lyrics, of course):

Intro
Uh-oh

Verse
I won?t be so what will we wait
And our reasons so away
Then we crawl out of our holes
Into the open air
It takes us so long we cry away
And corners they may fail
I don?t know what I see
But I know it?s not fair
Baby, say you love me
I don?t believe her waiting
Whether anyone would
You call me up and say a lie
So sad.
Take me, to come again
And now I?m watching

Chorus
By and it?s hauling
To the old way down
We swing our hands and
Hope that everyone comes back

Verse
I don?t believe you saying
I don?t believe what you?re doing here
You tell me good intentions
Watch you hang from your tree
I don?t believe what you said
And walking by my door
I find all these smiling faces
Locked up and

Chorus
Tied over rhythm
Of an old song I heard
Wild and freedom
Sail away again memories fall
Intro x4
Hey we feel so cold

Breakdown

Verse
I never thought it was cool
Winter day not to buy
By the head down low
I Say this won?t tear me out
That could do it for a week or more
Then be waiting by ahhh-eeee
I don?t care no matter what
I want anyone to

Chorus
Pour their soul out an open page
Crushed by a memory so my happiness fell away
Intro x4
And tore my mind and darkness fell

Ending

It was a real beauty of a songlet that was tossed around a few times in '93 before falling into the realm of questionable three-second tease material, where I'm guessing it will remain indefinitely. Unfortunately, I don't have any location to host it online, and I don't go on AIM too often at all, but I'd be glad to send out an e-mail if you're interested.

And to all of you, thanks for taking a look at the tab.

The tab looks great. Hey, can you send me this song. I used to stream it off a site but it shut down last year. Haven't listened to this in ages and you got me itching. You gotta love Dave fingerpickin' and slappin'. bear2221@hotmail.com Thanks!

That is the best version I have seen on the web, very close. She is very good at tabbing. But, there are mutes in it, and I am sure it is 100% fingerpicked. So I did a little editing, so here is what I got.

Code: Select all

-----------------------------------
 Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors - DMB
-----------------------------------
This song is finger picked

Verse
e----------------------------------------------------------------------
B--3---3---------------------------------------------------------------
G--4---2---4---6-------------------------------------------------------
D--4-------5---7-------------------------------------------------------
A--2-------------------------------------------------------------------
E------2---3---5-------------------------------------------------------

Chorus
e----------------------------------------------------------------------
B--7---5---5---4-------------------------------------------------------
G--6---6---6---4-------------------------------------------------------
D--7-------4---4-------------------------------------------------------
A--5---4-------2-------------------------------------------------------
E----------6-----------------------------------------------------------

Bridge
e--------------7-------------------------------------------------------
B--3---7---5---7---4---2-----------------------------------------------
G--4---6---4---7---2---3-------------4--------4---4--2--2--1-----------
D--4---7---5---5---3-------3------2--------2------2--0--0--2-----------
A--2---5---4-----------1-------0---------------------------2-----------
E------------------1--------------------4---------3--2--1--0-----------
Yes, I am in a box

That last chord in the chorus sounds a little more consonant to me than its tabbed. Maybe my ear is just off. I always liked this tab, but I think your bridge and ending are more accurate (Nice job!) :
