SHN files changing to BAK files???!!!.....

Unread post by JimiThing » Mon Apr 21, 2003 11:24 am

some of my shn's screwed up when I was converting them to mp3's and now they read .BAK files and they are messed up. Anyone know what's up w/ that and how to fix them?

If you have the mkw Audio Compression window open, go to "options" in the upper left and pick "file options"...a dialog box appears. In that box there are a few check boxes...one of them says "overwrite existing files with new output (uncheck to rename existing files to *.bak)"

Although I don't know what this means (I am new at the SHN thing) it may steer you in the right direction for solving your problem.

Also, without getting into the whole debate on mp3 (lossy) format, the tapers request that their work not be decoded into mp3....just a comment for what its worth.

thanks man. didn't even mess the options thing. I should have snooped around first.

so we aren't suppose to convert them to smaller files just to ease up the drive space on our own pc?

people how do trades and B&Ps... so those are illegal? Im new to this too

No, you are *never* supposed to convert them to smaller files (MP3s) - SHN is as small as they can get without losing quality.

Trades and B&P's are not illegal, as long as no money exchanges hands.

I guess you could convert them though.. you'd just lose some quality.

first off, you never trade with mp3's, or shows that have ever been mp3's....anyway. it's not illegal because the music is live, and the band allows taping. it's not the same thing as downloading an album off of kazaa or giving someone a B&P of say Before These Crowded Streets. (yes, i've been asked before....)

If you do a B+P, you SHOULD get SHN files, usually on 3 or 4 disks (or how ever many it takes). If you look at the way the shows are compiled, the tapers usually break them up so the show fits nicely on a number individual disks.

The reason the tapers do not want anyone to decode the shows into mp3 is because that is a format that looses quality every time it is copied...(SHN and WAV formats do not loose quality)...and they do not want the community (yours and mine) diluted with those types of recordings. They are VERY passionate about this...and thank God they are.

If you want to get them off your computer, put them to cd's...but on this I hear you have to be careful to get an EXACT copy to disk, otherwise "pops" will appear randomly. There is a program to do this (you can download it) but I can't remember what it is...have not done that yet...I think I read about it on the boards at Antsmarching.org.

Can anyone else help him out here?

I'm pretty sure CloneCD or Nero can do exact copies... I got them both.

if EAC works with your drives, it's the absolute best thing to use for copying audio CDs. for some reason, i can't get mine to work, it hasn't since i installed windows XP last year. :(
