Questions About DVD
Hello,
I am a little confused about DVDs. Are they just like regular DVDs you buy in the store that you can watch? I've never traded anything besides SHN, so I don't really know much about other formats. I keep seeing people offering/asking for shows on DVD and I'm wondering exactly what it is they are offering/asking for.

yea, just like the ones you buy -- except most of these are filmed and edited by amateurs doing this for free...so obviously there will be a difference in quality from CP to a fanshot dvd
also, some dvd players do not support recordable disk formats...so check yours first or check the one you're thinking of purchasing

B+P by offer only...thank you

how do you know you're getting something you can watch though? from what i read in the FAQ provided in the thread entitled "General DVD Information", there seems to be all different kinds of DVD. which ones are watchable and not just plain audio?
when someone posts a thread saying something like "B&P for 5: D+T 3.29.03 DVD", does that usually mean its watchable or thats its just audio?

hmm, i don't know what you mean by 'just audio'
audio is traded on cd's...video and audio together as one product is traded on dvds or vcds (video cds)
that's how you know, if it is a 'dvd'
now, as far as knowing whether or not your specific player will handle a certain format of disk (-R, -RW, +R, +RW) or whatever, you need to just know your own player and then figure that out

thanks for the info Matty Boom i think i get it now.
after reading a DVD FAQ, i was sort of under the impression that DVD sometimes is 'just audio' like on a CD, but on DVD discs or something. i guess i didnt understand it.
so when someone offers up a DVD B&P, it really is something you can watch....interesting.
lastly, how do i know what format of disc my player can handle?
(-R, -RW, +R, +RW) is there a site i can go to for that? is it in the owner's manual?
again, thanks Matty Boom. i appreciate the help.

should be in the manual or you can find it at the website of the company that made it
if those don't work, trial and error is your hope

thank you both.
a have just a couple more questions.
what are the differences between all those formats? does it really matter?
what is DVD+R DL?
whats the difference between DVD and VCD?
my DVD player does not support SVCD, DivX, or WMA. are those important capabilities?
i think thats pretty much it. once again, thanks for all the help.

No, it doesn't really matter if your player is compatible with them. Basically, a ton of groups/companies wanted to develop the new standard for DVDs and everyone fought with each other and created their own standards, so now we have 5+
DVD+R DL is a dual-layer disc, which allows you to put twice as much data on 1 DVD-sized disk (it's a new format, new disc, new burners, etc.). A DVD is a Digital Video Disc, while a VCD is a Video Compact Disc. A VCD has MPEG1 video on a regular CD (not DVD). SVCD (Super Video Compact Disc) allows you to place DVD-quality video (MPEG2) on a regular CD. DivX is a video codec. They have tried to make an entry into the DVD player department, but nothing you buy or get will (yet) be DivX. WMA is Windows Media Audio - just means that if you put a CD with WMA files on it your player won't read it, whereas if you put one in with MP3 files in it it can play them.

OK Frank...you've read all the theory, asked all the right questions, and have been a very polite person in the process....so its time to put all that you have learned to work.
I'll B&P a DVD show for you. Just shoot me a PM and we'll take it from there. After one time you will be a pro.
By the way.....welcome to DMBTabs. We're glad you're here!
