May FREEBIE Contest **WINNER ANNOUNCED**

Unread post by taylordb » Wed May 26, 2004 9:09 am

*****CLOSED*****

OK everyone; this is the 1st in a series of monthly freebie contests. We (matty and I) thought it would be fun to have a contest once each month based on some “ever changing” criteria for judging…with the winner walking away with a freebie (CD, DVD or both).

This month’s theme is “Random Acts of Kindness”. Post in this thread a TRUE example of a random act of kindness that you performed for someone during this current month (May 2004). Remember, a random act of kindness expects nothing in return from the person you performed the act for. PERFORMING SEX ACTS DOES NOT COUNT!!

The judging is totally subjective, and the best story in OUR opinion wins the freebie. And this months prize is…..(drum roll please)….

The awesome new fan based, 8 CD disk DMB Gorge (audio) box set, “Sitting On Top Of The World”. Newly added item to the freebie: The DMB 2 disk fan-based DVD of the Gorge from 8-7-03.
Mason so graciously seeded the audio box set last week over at Sharing the Groove; here is a link for info on it http://www.sharingthegroove.org/msgboar ... adid=65463

The deadline for posting is 11:59 pm Monday May 31st. May is not over yet, so there is still time to spread the love!!!

Let the contest begin…..lets see those stories :D

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is based totally on the honor system. No one can stop you from fabricating a story (i.e. lying), but if you do:
#1 you’ll feel bad about yourself
#2 bad karma will surround you, and
#3 you will go directly to Hell

One of my best friends is a senior, and doesn't have a license. He's also a really good artist, who has done alot of good work this year. Unfortunatley for him, he already graduated and left ALL of his art, I mean, this stuff is incredibly cool looking abstract stuff. A couple was oh, 6 feet by 4 feet in size. Well, he is gone and all of this stuff is at school. Being that he doesn't have a license, and he lives really far away, he couldn't get it. So, at the end of the year all the unclaimed art gets thrown away. And I would hate to see this stuff get chucked. So what do I do? I load a years worth of art into my car, even a half-dry oil painting that he just finished, which left a nice permanent blotch of blue on my dash. I loaded it up and drove an hour or so to his house, but on my way there I saw him walking down the road near his house (3 miles or so away). So what I did was I picked him up, along with the art, and brought it all to his house. He was stoked about it all. Free ride, all his stuff back.

That's my kind act.

My friend and I were on our way from Baie-Comeau, Quebec to Labrador City to start a new summer job. We had all of our stuff jammed in his little car, and since he packed his stuff first, most of mine found its way into the back seat, including my brand new guitar, computer, and all of my clothes. Anyway, around 3 in the morning, we were around 2 hours outside of Lab City when we were catching up to a van. It was really foggy out, so we decided to stay behind it for a whle rather than try to pass it on the dirt road. All of a sudden, the van pulls over and stops. We pulled up alongside of it to see what was wrong, and they said they didn't know, just that the van shut off all of a sudden. After trying to get it started for about an hour, they came to the conclusion that it wasn't moving, and they'd have to get a tow truck to get it the next day. There was no service for any cell phones, and the nearest S.O.S phone was probably 10km away. So, not wanting to see the three of them them stranded, I took out all of my stuff from the backseat of the car and loaded it up in their van. They locked up the van and got in, and we gave them a ride home. They seemed like nice people, so we trusted them enough to leave our stuff there. On the way into Lab City they gave us their address and phone numbers and stuff, so the next day, we contacted them and got all of my stuff back from their place. It turns out one of them worked at the bar, so we get pretty sweet deals on booze now! They were pretty grateful! Anyways, that's my good deed!

This may not be random so to speak, but anyway...

As Danny and Matty know, a good friend of mine took his life a month and a half ago. About a week or so later I wrote a poem about him which I have added to a background from 311's song Beyond the Gray Sky which the leader singer wrote about his best friend who committed suicide. I had a friend of mine print it out on some nice photo paper and I will be giving it to Bobby's parents this weekend when we all go up to their cottage on the causeway to Cedar Point, which is the same place it happened.

"I have no idea what this girls name is" <-- my favorite part of that commercial, I have no good deeds to speak of, at least not random, they most go towards the gf and friends. But good job to all you nice fellas.

My wife and I know a couple whose finacial status isn't exactly stable. The husband owns a business but does not do very well, especially during tax season. He is always filing for as many extentions as possible, so he can save and scrape up all the money he can just to pay his taxes. Not only that but they are kind of an older couple who has 8 kids. Most of them are moved out of the house, but they still do the best they can to help them. So this year, my wife and I decided to help them out with money to help pay their taxes.

My wife and I both work to make ends meet because I am a full time student. On top of that we have an 18 month old daughter, who is absolutely wonderful, but kids are pretty expensive. We had a few thousand dollars saved up due to careful budgeting during the year, so we went to the bank and got a cashiers check for $200. (We got a cashier's check because then the couple couldn't return it or rip it up). We took the check to the couple and I will never forget the looks on their faces. The husband was a little angry at first but then he softened and felt very grateful and the wife just started absolutely bawling. It was probably one of, if not the, most rewarding acts of service I have ever done
